Looking to build first htpc need advice

So have some cash on hand and looking to build a htpc. First off what best route for most HD upgrade ability. Id like it took look nice and use an htpc case but same time want as much HD upgrade ability as possible also want them in a Raid set up or something along those lines so HD doesnt go and i lose 2 TB worth of media. Is there efficient way to house HDs outside of case?

What is your budget?  Have you considered a NAS for storage?

You can go small/cute mATX/ITX HTPC and a NAS/media server hidden elsewhere in the house wink.gif Better mATX if u planning on tuners, etc

That was my thought ^

Newegg has a NAS coming up on the ShellShocker today at 3pm PST it looks like.  I'm not sure how good it is though, you'd want to look into that before buying.

[edit] It's this NAS:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816322006

That's not a NAS, that's just an external drive tower that connects with USB3.0, eSATA or Firewire. It'll still work if you want to connect it directly to the HTPC, but by itself it can't connected to network.

If you don't want to build a NAS, most people go with Synology, QNAP, etc. How many HDDs do you need at the moment?

There's a few HTPC cases that house a good number of hard discs. Such as the one I have, Silverstone GD08, can house 12 hard discs ( if you fille the optical bays, like 8 or 9 if you don't ) I believe, so plenty of space while maintaining an HTPC look and feel and not just `a computer next to the tv` look.

But aside from that route, you can just build a cheap home fileserver with pretty much any old computer you can get your hands on and have it networked to share the files. Then use a smaller HTPC case.
