AMD FX-8120 or Phenom II x4 965 BE

Thread Starter
Hello All,

Here is my current hardware:
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE
CPU Cooling: Corsair H80
GPU: HIS Digital AMD Radeon HD 6970
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 8Gb (2 x 4Gb) 1600Mhz
HDD(s): 2 x Western Digital WD500AAKX (Raid 0)
OD: Asus DVD/CD Combo
PSU: Antec HCG-900
Case: Cooler Master HAF912
Case Fans: 2 x 200mm 800RPM Cooler Master, 1 x 120mm 2000RPM Rosewill (Removed a 200mm Cooler Masters due to H80s Size...)

Now for why I am looking at upgrading, I have recently purchases the H80 and while pulling the old heat sink off I did something extremely stupid. I accidently ripped the 955 BE right out of the socket while it was still locked, the board and chip seamed okay at first glace and even on reinstallation. But now my CPU is a freaking heat deamon! I have tried everything and with no luck.... (new thermal paste, lowering multiplier to like 14, new cpu cooler) So I have decided to upgrade and wanted your opinion. Here is what I do on a daily basis, I am a programmer so I'm constantly compiling code (Processor Intensive) I also play BF3, BFBC2, Guild Wars, Skyrim, Dirt 3 and other games with similar CPU/GPU loads. To give you an idea of how processor intensive compiling can be when I compile one of my smaller Android APKs it takes 20 minutes on 955BE at 100% load. Please explain which process you recommend for my and why thanks for your posts!

Can your compiling use 8 cores? If it can its a no brainer. The FX line up is an excellent choice for multi threaded tasks. And with the price around 160 dollars now it is a great value If you are going to use all the cores. Now in gaming the 965 may beat it by a small margin. Most games only use 2-4 cores. BF3 i think can use more but it is the exception to the rule. Not to mention the 965 is getting to be quite old now i think its 3 years old. A FX chip would give you a AM3+ motherboard that will offer and upgrade path to piledriver and i think steamroller. Hoped that helped and good luck with your decision.

Personally I'd wait on Piledriver to see how that turns out, not only performance-wise but price-wise. One way or another, it will have an effect on the FX-8120's price. The 965 is getting harder to find and is already a few years old. I can sat the FX-8120 OC's nicely for the most part and for my day-to-day, it is plenty. For gaming... well I am not hard core but what I have played (ME2/3, Just Cause, and others of that same nature) I have had no issues so far.

If you need to decide now... FX-8120 then. If you don't like it it will be easier (and cheaper) to upgrade from.

Why not try and remove the heatspreader on your current CPU? You probably tore it loose somehow, and now it can't get rid of the heat.

If you can find a decent Thuban..They are better IMHO
You probably pulled the IHS up from the chip itself a little..In a pinch..955-980 would be OK too.
..but Thubans clock higher and run cooler..I like to disable two cores..and clock higher biggrin.gif

i,ve had my 965x4 rip out twice now, while locked in the socket,it makes no sence that it would heating up like that,as long as no pins got bent???????????if you wanna go with a new phenom chip go with a x6 at least,,,i play B3 and Dirt 3,they use all 6 cores and are smoother gameplay than the 4 core, grab a 8120 or 8150,there just as good as the phenom for gaming and really good for multi threaded tasks.....the 965x4 would be the same as your 955 in performance
