"UnConventional" The 22-Drive UnRaid in CM-690 II [Build Log] [COMPLETED]

Hi all!

Have my build log going on at the UnRaid forum but tought that since there is a huge number of
CM-690 II owners here somebody might find my build interresting.

623

So this is the starting point.
My slightly modded desktop machine side by side with my new soon to be full 22-drive UnRaid 690.

The plan is to try to find a way to cram full 22-drive UnRaid server into that case.
I'm running a 6-drive "test"-server at the moment and it's been great.
10TB server has around 7TB of BR+DVD rips and 2TB of TV-recordings at the moment.
I have four more 2TB disks ready for the build to finnish resulting in a 18TB media server for starters.
So potentially it could become a huge 80TB beast if upgraded with 4TB drives in the future.

There is a good chance that the new case will be modded to Black&White to match the desktop machine
which started its life as an all white CM-690II also.

700

These are some of the parts I'm hoping to get stuffed inside the case.
Thanks to Ruud at CM-store.eu for finding me those 3-drive HDD-cases to start the build with!

472

So this is the rough idea...
Two stacks of 11 drives and 6x140mm fans. (3 stacked at the front and other 3 in between the two HDD-stacks)

572

Removed the 3.5" HDD-cages and the 5.25" assembly.
Cut out the front of the case to make room for the 3x 140mm fans.
Then cut out the MB-wall at the back of the caste to make room for the botherboard that will be rotated 90deg.

566

This is the MB with Pentium G620. Chosen solely for the size of the board and 2x PCIe x16 slots.

Have to run now but will be posting some more later...

So the plan was to rotate the MB so that it woud lie against the backwall of the case.
The inside width of the case is around 204mm and the MB width is 194mm + VGA connector.

398

Cut out some aluminium U-profile to use as a base for the MB-stanoffs.

398

First testfitting the MB sideways to the case and one of the AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards.

700

View from the cable management side. The SATA ports are situated nicely inside the cable management space.

398

Covered the IO-port hole with a piece from an old case side panel had lying around and had the MB-stands fixed in place.

590

There it hangs...

605

So in the end there is 2mm clearance from the VGA-port on the left.
and 5mm clearance to the PCB on the right.
As you can see I had to cut away parts of the triangle struts on the side panels to get them to slide into place.

Next it's time to start building the HDD-stacks.

I assume you are going headless on this? Interested to see how this comes out. Why not do a mini-itx with a 24 port card?

I quick description where I'm at right now...

UnRaid%205-1.jpg

Started up with these cage sides...

UnRaid%205-4.jpg

And ended up with a bunch of stuff like these.

UnRaid%205-2.jpg

Screwed the parts to a wood block to get the proper alignment and distances checked out.

UnRaid%205-3.jpg

This is the the first of the angled-aluminium pieces to hold everything in place..
Parts still screwed to the wooden block I started to pop-rivet the aluminium angle to the cage-pieces.

UnRaid%205-6.jpg . UnRaid%205-8.jpg

After four pieces of aluminium and a whole bunch of pop-rivets this is what I ended up with.

UnRaid%205-7.jpg

Three 140mm fans should fit in between the stacks nicely.

UnRaid%205-9.jpg . UnRaid%205-10.jpg

13-Drive stack... I know 11 was the desired height but it was easier to asseble using the top part also.
I have to do some measuring and calculations to determine how tall of a stack I can get into the inside of the case.

Next it's time to start making the front fan wall?
It's gonna be a tight fit yet again to get three 140mm fans onto the right place.

Now if I only could figure out from where I could get two more sets of those CM690 HDD-cages? headscratch.gif
Anybody care to help me up so that I don't have to totally cannibilize my desktop machine. sadsmiley.gif
(Would rather not buy two more complete cases just to get those four pieces out of them) weirdsmiley.gif

Hopefully I can get some more work done this coming week.
