"UnConventional" The 22-Drive UnRaid in CM-690 II [Build Log] [COMPLETED] - Page 9

Anyone ever look in to doing a similar mod with a different case? I happened to pick up a Fractal Design R4 because the XL is discontinued and the XL R2 actually loses drives bays, going from 10 to 8. So I grabbed an R4 since it was on sale. I'm assuming something similar could be done, although not the guy to forge this new ground unfortunately. Short of that, is this build within reach of a mere mortal? And possibly without having to buy 2 extra cases to gut it for the drive bays? Wasn't able to discern that even after reading all 8 pages here.

Well I know you can buy the CM bays separately, or at least you used to be able to last I looked.

As for the mod, it should be doable in other cases, although maybe no as easy since the 690 II has superb ventilation everywhere.

Was it hard to make the front?
I am interested to do something like that myself.

What SAS controller did you use?

Excellent build. I read the thread from beginning to end. Very talented.

Thread Starter
Thanks for the compliments you all!

Been very unactive these past months because of a MAJOR renovation in our apartment building.

The Un-Conventional is rocking solid at 20Tb at the moment and haven't given me any problems so far.

I'm still very stoked about how the whole build got together so nicely.
My first real mod-job after all. thumb.gif

I've just updated the specs of my rigs and will soon be adding a new one that I've been toying around with lately.
I'll probably start a "scratch"XBMC-build in the coming weeks.
(More on that later in it's own thread)

Thanks Hawk!
The cards are Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 's
Very widely used and throughly tested in UnRaid rigs.

I know it isn't a scratch XBMC build but my Zotac Zbox AD12 is extremely smooth and plays HD audio and Blu-rays perfectly. Tiny too. 6"x6" Not sure if I could have build it cheaper either.

Thanks. I've planned to get two LSI 9207-8i cards. I can get them for $233.xx and they are PCIe 3.0 and SATA3 6Gb/s. Hard to know what *recent* hardware works with unRAID v5.x.
