ESXi server built on top of Desktop Parts

Thread Starter
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

2x 32 GB total G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C10D-16GAB

Raid 10 6x (270GB Usable) OCZ Agility 3 AGT3-25SAT3-90G 2.5" 90GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
This one will Hold ESXi and Linux OS's...maybe 1 Windows.

RAID 10 4x 2kGB Usable for File Storage Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 3.6GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8150FRGUBOX

Raid Controller IBM ServeRAID M1015 Storage controller- Serial ATA-300 / SAS 2.0- 600 MBps

Am I thinking along the correct line? I was tempted to go server board and get dual CPUs but it would double the expense if not triple.

Where can I improve?

I am wanted to consolidate 4 small Linux servers I have at the moment. The function not the data so much.

Then wanted to add on some more windows servers. I run a lot of TCP/IP applications and want to host a database or two and some HTTPs.

No need for 6 SSDs or a 990FX motherboard. As stated earlier, you can only use 32GB ram without a license.

What do you mean? Too much power? I figured RAID 10 with a couple of SSDs would give great performance and modo I dunno.
I'd switch to an Intel build, as the RAID and chipset support is generally better for ESXi.

You are better off with a large number of 1TB or 1TB 7.2kRPM drives in RAID 5 for your datastore (where VM's/VDMK's are stored), and then just install ESXi on a USB thumb drive of 2GB capacity or more.

The ESXi ID install to a usb drive. The network card on that motherboard may not be supported make sure you check its comp-ability with VMware ESXi
