Spin Retry Count - HDTune

Thread Starter
HDtune shows a warning on one of my drives, it says the drive was unable to spin up. But I've googled this and found posts saying how SpeedFan works better than HDTune. So I downloaded that and Speedfan says the spin retry count is okay, so does ChrystalDiskInfo. so should I be worried?
EDIT: it also passes all the tests in SeaTools.

Can you post a screenshot of the HDTune info? Most programs fail at properly interpreting the numbers, so someone needs see what they actually are to advise you of what they mean.

A low value probably isn't anything to worry about, but if it's high enough or starts increasing fast, that means your drive is degrading mechanically and will eventually fail.

Crystal Disk Mark never worked right for me. I use HD Sentinel. Best one out there. It also allows for checking SMART status on drives that are part of an Intel Rapid Storage Raid array.

I'll post a SS of it when I'm on the pc but this is basically what it says;

Spin Retry Count - Current 100, Worst 100, Threshold 97, Data 1

Data - 1

It failed to spinup to the rated speed once... probably nothing to worry about. It could be a fluke; maybe the voltage from the wall dropped, and your PSU failed to adequately compensate, causing the HDD to not receive enough juice at the right moment?

If it goes up beyond that, keep an eye on it. If it starts increasing rapidly, then you have a big problem on your hands, but at this moment you have nothing to worry about.

Is it possible that it was my PSU?
Reason I think this is because at that moment, when I decided to check HDTune, I started folding for the first time, before that, the HDTune showed it was fine.

It's possible. But even so, I wouldn't worry about it until it increases beyond 1. Like I said, it could just be a fluke.

You could try to force it to increase; get that folding started again and see if you can cause it to go up! If it doesn't, and it doesn't increase at all within the next month, then don't worry. But if it does start going up, make sure you have all your important data backed up, just in case.

Thanks for the help, I've decided to return the drive. Reason being, the case I opened on Ebay with the seller ends in 3-4 weeks, after that, if the drive's health worsens, there'd be nothing I could do, I doubt the seller would even refund after that much time.

He might not.

What model of drive was it? Most drives have manufacturer warranties. In the case of WD, sometimes it pays to RMA to them instead... they often upgrade you to a new/better/faster/larger drive.

it's a SeaGate 750GB drive, the ST37 series, I checked their site for warranty info and they said it wasn't covered.
