Chromebox.

I was looking at a chromebox and then noticed that it only had a 16GB SSD. That would be excellent for the OS, as we all know, but rubbish for storing large amounts of files.

Does anyone know if you could just open it up and add a HDD?

I think your best bet would be high speed external, or network storage.

Ouch. That I did not want to see. Like a MAC MINI I suppose. I will do some more research on upgrading the RAM etc. Thanks.

Hmm. Come to think of it, could you wipe the SSD and install Linux on it? I take it so, but you never know...

From my understanding Google isn't "happy" (behind the scenes) about that thought but they weren't going out of their way to stop it. Perhaps they've changed on that issue?

Hmm. I mean the Chromebox looks great but I don't know if I'd be able to adapt to their OS...

Saying that I can use Linux fine coming from Windows so maybe their wont be a problem... it just seems such a jump from a normal OS. But hey, as they add more features I'm pretty sure everyone gets them as updates.

Really it's not exactly an OS either...it's a like an access terminal or just a web browser. To be honest I wish Samsung would be releasing some with even just Ubuntu on them because they're like the perfect price to try and get Linux mainstream. I honestly could see wiping Chrome off these and reselling them with another distro because they're just right for that. Then again CompuLab (the guys behind the Tegra2 minicomputer TrimSlice) is supposed to be releasing their E450 AMD collaboration effort sometime soon. Won't be as "fast" but it's pure Linux straight up.

im not sure but i heard somewhere that chrome os is based on ubuntu. these rigs fit a neche, the one where my grandmother fits ie only uses chrome and nothering else, plus google docs in chrome. if you could install a normal linux distro on these they would make great low cost and small form factor rigs. somehow thou, i just cant see chrome os going mainstream

If you're going to go on the upgrade path, you'd be better by making a mini-ITX system on a case like the Wesena Mini ITX2 (http://www.wesena.co.uk/product.php/5/2/itx2). Stuff an i3/A10 in there with a low profile cooler, 128GB SSD, and low-profile Samsung RAM, and you're set!

Looks good, but I doubt it would fit the 7770?

You can't fit a HD 7770 in the Chromebox either!

Though the Trinity A10 has an integrated 7660, I believe, or something like that.

I know I know.. but I was going to buy the Chromebox not as an upgrade but a second machine... you said upgrade and got me thinking... that case is damn sexy..

Anyone willing to grab one of these new SB celeron Chromeboxes/Laptops and see if they can throw a useful distro on them?

I would grab one just to have a neat little XBMC box.

I just got a Samsung series 5 chromebook a few days ago. If the chromebox is the same it will not be a straight forward task to just load a new OS on it like you would a desktop. The chromebook doesn't have any kind of normal bios and you can't boot from a USB. I know there is probably a way though. It is a fairly peculiar device, to gain root access you flip a physical switch hidden under a cover on the side!

I actually really like ChromeOS I wouldn't dream of changing it.
