Full drive encryption?

Thread Starter
I do some pretty sensitive stuff (not pr0n lol, my work and things related to work) on my desktop. I'm thinking it'd be a good idea to fully encrypt the drive, especially since I'm moving to a highER crime area (there's NO crime where I live now, so any small amount is higher). I've heard truecrypt is good and also saw once that even the FBI couldn't h4xor it. Are there any other options for full drive encryption where it installs a loader and you have to enter a password before you can even access the OS menu?

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, it's like 50/50 on the edge of Networking & Sec and HDDs & Storage.

AFAIK no, truecrypt is your best bet.

I would however recommend you sidegrade your processor to something that has the AES instruction set so you have hardware acceleration for the encryption/decryption process. Unfortunately you will have to back down to a i5-680 to get it, as NOTHING ELSE on the socket except the i5-6xx processors have it. You can do without it, but it will put more load on your processor.

Microsoft includes BitLocker for free with Windows Vista (and newer) Ultimate and Enterprise editions. After initial encryption is complete, BitLocker has no noticeable impact on system performance.

I use trucrypt after using bitlocker and I think the best option is trucrypt for the variety of options and the fact its open source. It also has an option for USB travel.

Interesting, my wife has a Lenovo laptop and I noticed they specialize their software for that brand. Would this be more beneficial for her laptop than say Trucrypt?

SecureDoc sells hardware encrypted laptops. Performance is much better and doesn't hog the CPU. All of our new laptops use hardware encryption.

But I'm sure they costs many thousands of dollars and aren't made for much but security. (to both of you)
