First, short story. I have an FX-8150 on a Asus Sabertooth 990fx. My cpu temp was going up to 65C on prime. But my core temps weren't that high (55C). I'm using HWMonitor, ie CPUID Hardware monitor. Should I be worried? Why is this happening?
Longer story. I had my rig set up with the stock cooler. I didn't like the temps so I bought the Noctua NH-D14. I also decided to buy the MX-4 thermal compound, even through it's just about 1C cooler than the NT-H1. Installing it proved impossible, as my crappy ram was too tall (Corsair Vengance 1600, which had two bad sticks out of four, but two bad sticks from two different 2*4Gb kits, so can't RMA unless I'm willing to be without a computer for a while). So it doesn't fit with two of those sticks in the second and forth position, the fins hit the ram fins by about a millimetre.
So I installed back the stock cooler, until I get my 4*8Gb mushkin silverline ram kit. But I cleaned it well. and used the MX-4 to seal the deal. The temps are now ok. The max I get from prime95 are 61C for the cpu after 30 minutes, and 52C on the cores.
And on idle, I'm getting 47C cpu temp, and 33C core temps. The ambient temperature is 31C. So I should be amazed, right? The delta is only 2C from the room.
But why is the cpu temp so high? Mainboard is 34C. Asus thermal radar shows my VCORE1 at 46C. So what should I trust? Cpu or core temps? And whose ever heard of a 14-15C difference between cpu and core temps? What's going on?
I don't want to know if I should be worried of those temps. I want to know why there is such a huge difference in the readings. And who's right. Latest firmware, latest drivers, latest versions. What's going on?
