CPU temp much higher than core temp. Some help please.

First, short story. I have an FX-8150 on a Asus Sabertooth 990fx. My cpu temp was going up to 65C on prime. But my core temps weren't that high (55C). I'm using HWMonitor, ie CPUID Hardware monitor. Should I be worried? Why is this happening?

Longer story. I had my rig set up with the stock cooler. I didn't like the temps so I bought the Noctua NH-D14. I also decided to buy the MX-4 thermal compound, even through it's just about 1C cooler than the NT-H1. Installing it proved impossible, as my crappy ram was too tall (Corsair Vengance 1600, which had two bad sticks out of four, but two bad sticks from two different 2*4Gb kits, so can't RMA unless I'm willing to be without a computer for a while). So it doesn't fit with two of those sticks in the second and forth position, the fins hit the ram fins by about a millimetre.

So I installed back the stock cooler, until I get my 4*8Gb mushkin silverline ram kit. But I cleaned it well. and used the MX-4 to seal the deal. The temps are now ok. The max I get from prime95 are 61C for the cpu after 30 minutes, and 52C on the cores.

And on idle, I'm getting 47C cpu temp, and 33C core temps. The ambient temperature is 31C. So I should be amazed, right? The delta is only 2C from the room.

But why is the cpu temp so high? Mainboard is 34C. Asus thermal radar shows my VCORE1 at 46C. So what should I trust? Cpu or core temps? And whose ever heard of a 14-15C difference between cpu and core temps? What's going on?

I don't want to know if I should be worried of those temps. I want to know why there is such a huge difference in the readings. And who's right. Latest firmware, latest drivers, latest versions. What's going on?

vCore1 and 2 are your vrms. NOT your core temps use an app like HWMonitor to check your core temps.

crappy ram? no.. - wont fit under d14 yes...

Solution to the your ram issue lol same modules just smaller heat spreaders. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233186

core temperature is what is crucial. socket temp is important, but not for what we
look for in diagnosis.
is this with an overclock or stock settings?
the d-14 should let you traverse the 120mm fan upwards to clear the RAM.
Noctua Board/RAM compatibility.
unless your case is that narrow.

The original corsair vengance modules WILL NOT fit under the d14, i don't care what the compatibility list says.

I know Vcore1 is the stuff that supplies the voltage to the cpu, and not the cpu. But the temperatures of that should be similar to the cpu, at least on the sabertooth. It seems logical, the same amount of electrons flow through it. Coretemp lower than motherboard? Doesn't make sense.

I also know that core temps is "all that matters". However, could it be wrong? How can the cores only be 2C higher than room temperature? We're talking about the BD 8150 here, not an efficient chip, even at idle.

So let's say that often the cpu temp sensor isn't worth anything. Can the core temps also be wrong?

TheAMDMan, did you read my post? I am using HWMonitor. Version 1.19.0, driver version 135.

Yeah, I did, and i missed that part. tongue.gif

Do note that the 8core FX cpu's hog a lot of power and the vrms dont get as much air cpu does when the stock fan is mounted the cooler blows air downward to the other components such as your vrm's when the d14 is on they don't get as much air. your vrm's will get very hot, yet i would worry about it untill they excede the 70's biggrin.gif

Stock. I don't overclock anything. But at idle, many cores seem to run 4.9 Ghz, and some at 1.4Ghz.

Honestly, I don't know why I even care about temps. The Noctua is back in it's box, until I get the new ram kit, or more likely, when I get the new FX-8350 in october (I think it's coming out then). Also, my Antec 1200 might interfere with the side panel's fan mount, which I can remove, but that means no filter, so dust city. Honestly, I have the worst luck. I'd just like everything to be smooth sailing, not on the edge of breaking.

I like that too, as I wasn't able to fit it fanless, with the first ram module not in. It would fit one screw, but the other screw would literally be 1, away. I don't force things or bend things. I also don't like one heatsink touching another.

My kit is CMZ8G3M2A1600C9. By the way, it anyone wants two ram module cheap, they fail at 1333, never mind 1600, with memtest, in under 24h. One with a dozen errors, the other with a few thousand. Pay me 1$ and shipping and they're yours. I use them as paper weights right now.

It does not fit the Noctua.
