Small Form Factor Ammo Can. Lan Party capable.

post #1 of 27
Thread Starter
I'm trying to put together an idea for whats going to be needed in a LAN party capable ammo can size comp. Something that could play BF3, Skyrim, and anything pretty beefy on medium settings. If it exceeds the medium stuff, then I'll be super happy.

This will all be a project for the case mod section. I'll end up setting pics down when I start.
50 cal ammo can or one 25 mm ammo can
Price wise, I want to keep this below 700-800 dollars as far as all the internal hardware goes. I'll provide the screen/mouse/headset/keyboard.

Obviously this will be a military-esque build influenced by mech games I've played in the past.

The reason I'm posting here is to get feedback on what to use hardware wise or if someone has a list of parts that would work well for this type of build?

Thank you!

Mitx 2011 with 7870 or 570. Don't go overkill with the ram, and remember that airflow is KEY.

No way. Not on that budget, and not in that small form factor.

I could cut out the vents for the rig on the ammo can. What kind of airflow are we talkign about for something like this?
post #5 of 27
You're probably going to be better off with a larger number of small diameter fans. On the vertical side of the case, you can probably stack two 80mm fans on top of one another and have some decent airflow. It's hard to really say without knowing the dimensions of the case.

For hardware. consider an i3 Sandybridge and GTX550 Ti.

I was eyeballing this;
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157312

Max supported is 16gb or ram right? so then when I'm browsing around on the forum, why is it that people only put maybe 8 gigs in? I play quite a bit of video games. But I also have a ton of windows open and programs. Would the extra RAM help me out then?

Also,
I was considering saving myself the time and forking over the extra money for the i5 2500k. Would the i3 eventually be a bottleneck to the system in some way when gaming?

I haven't purchased an ammo can but I still dont' want to be gimped on the hardware specs.

Are you sure a standard ATX board will fit in your ammo can? Dimensions should be 12 inches by 9.6 inches nominal.

Ah, that looks much better. I'm unfamiliar with ASRock, but their reputation for quality has been steadily increasing recently. It's a bit expensive considering your budget, though. Are there any good options around the $100 price point?

For memory, you don't really need much more than 8GB, especially since this is going to be for gaming / LAN parties. Here's your best option for memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

Is it going to pretty much come down to the video card on graphic settings? I was checking out the EVGA GTX 550 Ti for the GPU.

So pretty much I've come down to these for the settings;

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072
MOBO:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157312
GPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625
RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

Btw thanks Kremstok for the advice on the RAM, it looks promising, I hope it works aswell as the reviews claim it to.

Total: 557.29. (Includes shipping already).

Any idea on a suitable GPU and PSU to use for this then?
