Honestly, I think an SSD would be more important in a weaker computer like most pads the Chromeboxes than in a gaming computer. Unless you have next to no patience. When 256GB cost 100 or less or 512GB costs 200 or less then I'll be less hesitant to buy them in the future. But maybe by that time they'll have a platform which 32GB or greater RAM amounts will be common/cheaper so a SSD will simply become insignificant to me besides booting and holding a RAMdisk image. I mean if everyone is saying that IO and read/write/latency are so important than they should be all up in arms demanding more RAM capacity for their mobos and CPUs to handle. That said I'm really hoping that prices continue "plunging" as I'd still like a SSD since they're the next advancement.

IT isnt about map loading. Everything is faster. I didn't know how good they were until i got one, everything feels more snappy. Dont knock it until you actually use one for a while!

The faster load/boot times for me I feel isn't worth the premium cost. Just like I want to spend another 1k on sandy bridge-e and sli 680s, but the improvement that I would personally feel from that investment wouldn't be worth the money. Same thing I feel with ssds.

Perhaps I'm in the wrong forum to say this...

EDIT: before I get flamed for saying just faster load/boot, I also mean a more snappier computer isn't worth the cost of an ssd.

I guess it comes down to opinions, but to me that snappyness is worth it. For me it was the biggest performance difference i have ever felt.

I didn't notice a speed increase when I put my SSD in, but I certainly noticed a slowdown when I booted from a HDD again.

Funny how that works. Without something to compare the speed to, I don't notice it tongue.gif

One is luxury, the other is more of a necessity. You don't see everyone recommending 3960k's and GTX 680's. If you want a 6-core i7 rig gaming rig, a 3930k and GTX 670 would be more cost effective. Of course I'd still recommend a 3820 unless you were truly doing some intensive multi-threaded programming.

Anyways, you can get a 60GB SSD for around $60 or less. The higher capacity drives are offering more bang for your buck (GB/$) but one doesn't need to invest $400 for a half terabyte drive.

And the biggest bottleneck of any computer nowadays is the disk drive. You can throw a SSD in a rig running an AMD Athlon II and it will be faster in basic tasks than a Intel i7.

It's not going to magically give you GTX680 frame rates if you have a GTX560. I think people need to sit back and objectively look at things. SSDs are good for the things they actually affect but they're not going to make a N450 Atom transcode as fast as a "normal" CPU; make a GPU significantly better; not going to fix your slow internet connection; etc. And honestly if RAM was cheaper and common CPUs/mobos could handle higher capacities then SSDs would be side shows to running a RAMdisk. Even with 3000MB/s random read speeds and much lower latency than my HDD; my programs don't load massive magnitudes faster than they would otherwise in Windows (though I will say being a compressed image might affect it a bit). However, installing and unistalling programs sure demonstrated a significant increase in speed. But, saying that a SSD will change everything is like saying that running a GTX680 with an Pentium1 changes the performance of the Pentium1 or a 5400RPM HDD. It doesn't. Use the right tool for fixing the right situation (bottleneck) is all I'm saying. Sadly, I fear people are just going to write me off as a SSD naysayer when I'm just not buying into hype or exaggerations. SSDs are nice....but they will only change areas they can directly affect.

A boot drive costs less than a hard drive. Definitely worth it.

I'm also on the verge of buying one and I'm already using Momentus XT's as my OS drives...and this is good news...but at the end of the day it's all about the NEEDS of the end user.

I might be labeled too as a naysayer because for me right now...there is no NEED for me to get an SSD due to the fact that I mainly use my rig for work and not play. There is no productivity increase for me as I do render GBs of video files from 1 HDD to another HDD as per my program advises...BUT...BUT...if I can get a 256GB SSD under $100 THEN I'll consider getting 2 SSDs and try them out. I think they're not far off at this price by the end of the year. (fingers crossed)

But really at the end of the day for storage and archival purposes you can't beat HDDs. For games and most commonly used files that aren't GBs for 1 file, SSDs are the way to go. 1TB SSD for under $150? YES PLEASE!
