the athlon x3 is a broken bit of junk really, its got a locked core, because its junk.
what i would recommend is the fx-6100 and a asus m5a99x,because there ment for each other.
another cheaper choice is to get an fm1 mobo for £60-80 and throw in a athlon II x4 for £60 = £130.
but the new apu are coming and waiting for fm2 mobo with a A10 5800 would be better still and under £200 for both cpu and mobo.

fm1 and athlon? will that work?

Calm yourself,I never try to fool or misrepresent.
1.X3 is running 1600MHz, FX4100 is running at 2,118MHz
2. PCMark is not 3DMark,scoring is based on complete system, and the GPU is mostly tested for web page rendering, not just gaming. The difference in scoring between a 6790 and 6770 is marginal, maybe 2,000 points at most.

You can look at the individual test scores to get a better idea. Now is 4.5GHz common on a X3, no. However 4.0GHz+ is now common since C3 stepping. The difference is the X3 is $65 vs $100 for the FX. The Rana does suffer a bit in gaming with no L3,however no L3 also reduces latency considerably, allowing for "snappier" performance. In fact, with that same X3 I managed to claim the worldwide low latency record for any system on maxxpi's database, beating out even tri-channel systems from Intel.

Hey,

AMD had stopped producing Thuban cores because of the new release of the AMD-FX Chips. Most people began to automatically throw their Thuban core chips for FX, and most were disappointed after spending good money on equal performing chips. The only real benefit from having an FX chip is an APU Design, and because of lower power-consumption. Thubans are hard to find still, because people have rolled back to them and are keeping them locked tigthly under a heatsink/CPU Block. Most people nowadays with Zambezi chips don't use the APU Graphics. AMD wasted tons of money designing a useless chip to most, except for the lower-end gamer/office consumers.

How about a real CPU comparison ? Here is the Passmark list showing the 4100 @ 3,982 and the 450 @ 3,062. That is a solid 30 % better performance. I would post a screen showing the Passmark list, but the 450 is a whole page down- it would only show one of them. If 30% better performance isn't worth $20 in a $600 build, why even bother building a rig?

Also, by your logic, the memory in your 450 rig would be running @ 3200 Mhz, and I am pretty sure it isn't doing that. The benchmarks you showed are listing the actual DDR speed, not the clock (half) speed. Everybody who has any savvy about this stuff at all knows that 3dMark and PCmark are mainly a GPU test- not a CPU test. If we wanted to know that, all you had to do was look at the 3dmark graph I posted a few posts up- you can see the 6790 compared to the 6770 (with theold ATI 5770 moniker still attached).

Shame AMD did this... redface.gif

Firstly, they aren't really inferior, except in a minority of scenarios. They just aren't as much of an improvement as anyone would have liked.

Secondly, more cores and a higher clock speed sound better to most buyers, so the chips can be sold for more. Along the same lines, showing the newer part in a negative light compared to the older one would do nothing but cost sales.

Thirdly, Zambezi is a smaller die than Thuban, so the CPUs cost less to make.
