Please show me a 15" ultra portable notebook with an ~8hr battery life + 2880x1800 IPS screen + 256/512/768GB Samsung 830 SSD + IB quad core and a dedicated GPU.

Don't be upset your notebook is a piece of junk compared to the Retina MBP.

RE battery life: A review I read (Ars, I think) tested the battery for web browsing and consistently ended up under 7 hours. Anand's two web tests put it at 7.30 (for a "light" workload) and 5.02 (for a "medium" workload). I'd guess that actual battery life is somewhere in between for most users.

15 inches is not an ultraportable in my book at all. That being said, I want the Retina MBP.

Anything over 4 pounds (my personal cutoff is closer to 3.5 pounds) is outright, not an ultraportable. Call it a "lightweight 15" " if you wish. My 13" laptop with a standard-voltage i3 weighs just 3.2 pounds, FWIW. Apple is in the minority with a 4.5 pound 13", that's the "not even trying" weigh-for-size class. Sony Vaio S, Thinkpad X1, Asus U30-series, etc. all are 13" standard-voltage laptops under 4 pounds.

The problem is, in order to get that kind of battery life out of a Thinkpad, you need the 9 cell battery.

That adds a lot of weight and size, since it sticks out of the back of the laptop. My Thinkpad T61 weighed about 4.5 lbs with the 4 cell, but with the 9 cell it weighed in at over 6 pounds. Even my 12.1" X200 tablet weighs almost as much as the retina MBP once I put in the 8 cell extended battery.

The retina MBP's ability to get 7 hours of battery life while driving a 2880x1800 screen is very impressive. Even more impressive is the fact that it only weighs 4.4 lbs.

Yeah i guess i didnt take into account things like 9 cell batteries and sheet batteries. But with the mbpr they found a way to have a large battery and still keep it light. With the 9 cell in that laptop it weighs more than two pounds more. You also have to consider that the battery in the mbpr is powering a higher rez screen. Its rated at 7 hours even though it is 20% larger than the battery in the old mbp (which were also rated at 7 hours).

Samsung makes nice laptops with similar internal batteries, but the one in the current mbp is also 20% larger than any batteries they currently have

That adds weight and bulk. My T61 weighed about 4.5 lbs with the 4 cell, but with the 9 cell it weighed in at over 6 pounds. Even my 12.1" X220 tablet weighs more than the retina MBP once I put the 8-cell extended battery in.

The retina MBP's ability to get 7 hours of battery life while driving a 2880x1800 screen is very impressive. Even more impressive is the fact that it only weighs 4.4 lbs.

doh.gif Can we just stick to facts? the W520 comes with a 9-cell standard. The Macbook Pro 15 has a similar battery capacity, at 95Whr (vs. ~90-95Whr of the W520). perfectblade simply stated the MBP 15 has the highest battery life of any laptop, and I simply provided a rebuttal. Nothing more, nothing less.

But since we're at it, quoted from here: http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x220.aspx
