for under a grand. I hear that they can overclock rediciulously well - 4 GHz. I was thinking of skipping PC gaming for a few years but having this powerhouse for engineering, at home, would be great news! Either or, I'm picking this up only for fragaplooza, CoH 2, and lan parties and I'll be storing it away as PC gaming is only going to distract me next year.
Worth it? I was thinking of spending 1700 on a sager and grabbing the HD 7970m and picking up an SSD, but overclocking this guy would be sufficient for what I'm going to be gaming on it. I don't game at high resolutions anyways (easier to react in competitive play).
Ugh, but yeah...the CPU isn't overclockable... either or.. still worth it? SetFSB might be able to push it a bit and the CPU is fine for gaming where it currently stands. GPU overclocking is allowed on it too.
Well, either or, I'm looking at i7-950 performance out of it at stocked. Still much better then my 555 @ 4 [GHz].
The 570m is essentially 6870/460 performance once OC'd to it's max eh? For the next few years, my preferred resolution is going to be anywhere from 960x540 to 1024x768/1024x600.

Yeah, the 570m gets going pretty well. I never even overclocked mine but I've seen people say that it overclocks fairly well for a mobile chip but you have to make sure that you keep the thermals in check. I wasn't too thrilled with the cooling of the MSI I had but that's because I'm too used to the awesome cooling in my desktop that I didn't like seeing 70C+ on the CPU and GPU when playing Skyrim lol.
The mobile Sandys are pretty damn good. I've got a Ivy mobile in my Asus G55 and the thing absolutely hauls when paired with a nice SSD.
If you can add a nice SSD to your budget they make a great addition to a nice laptop.

There was a guy on here that overclocked his 570m quite far. He was able to get stock 580m performance out of the bugger. That's nearly 20-30% improvements.
I had an SSD on my desktop and damn, did it ever fly. I'll just use the secondary drive as a media/file drive. Their so cheap too. Some SSDs are only 60 cents a GB these days. We were fine back in the day with 80 GB drives and only having a few games install at a time. How you liking the G55 btw? What are the temps like?

The temps are great. Running 3D Mark 11 the CPU only hits like 72C and the GPU hits like 62-65C. It's pretty cool and quiet as well. The MSI that I had only had one fan so it had to run pretty fast and loud to cool the GPU and CPU at the same time, so ASUS adding the second fan really seems to have made a difference in the noise aspect at least.
In the end all laptops are hot an loud to some degree so it really just comes down to what you want/like. Either way it's going to be fun.
Well I have my parents picking it up as I'm 400 Km away at the moment. The sale goes on for 3 days. They're picking it up tomorrow - hopefully; if they have the time. It's an inhouse sort of thing...you can't order.
7 day return policy, 60 day warranty. I'm going to stress it beyond belief once I get my hands on it.

I kept seeing a bunch of refurbished ones (the older models with the 5870/460ms) and used to think it had something to do with the cooling performance. Wow, under fully load, those temps are really nice. My ASUS, sig rig, gets upwards to 95 C without the cooling pad; with, about 82 C on full load. ASUS must have some pretty good cooling.
Yeah, that's that was my big concern. At least the heat pipes aren't on the same train towards the fins on the MSI like most non-gaming grade ones these days. My bro's HD5770m laptop overheats like crazy because of it. Next time I'm down there I'll reapply TIM. He just got a new PC anyways.
all laptops run hot to a degree as said and i know for a fact TIM some times just doesn't help, MY Acer is pegging 110c on the GPU. That is whit a copper shim and better air intake hole on the bottom cover. If you really wanna drop temps take look in to under volting. I personally i want every once of performance so i'm gonna work an extra 60-70mm fan in the gpu area.

The thing is, is that the TIM has degraded over time or the pipes need to be reseated. It used to perform just fine before? No throttling issues what-so-ever for hours and gave him solid performance. I'll take a look into under-volting; we also tried disabling turbo boost and or disabling cores. Nothing seemed to work on the software side of things, nor has a 1 foot fan, cooling plate, and removed bottom plate either.
I'd like to see your mod if you get around to adding a fan.
So my dad checked the laptop out and he shyed away from it as he thought I would have an issue with it as it is a refurbished. Anyways, talked to him about that and hopefully it is still there tomorrow.
Well i admit that is pretty derp my behalf, if it did run fine before. I would suggest just a rice grain of MX-2 or some other decent TIM then. Use the dot method it usually always makes an air tight seal allowing your TIM to last longer (so long as you keep light pressure on the heat sink while screwing it down [it can't lift up].
EDIT: You would be wise to check out the Note Book Review Forums, they have some guides and tutorials including under volting.

Thanks a bunch. It's probably the best route for his laptop.
I think they picked it up. It isn't listed on the site anymore. But I haven't been able to get a hold of the family as they're and myself are busy with a few things. Oh! Excitement!
Actually, you might consider doing a repaste. I opened up my ge620 last month to see just a wad of TIM on both the CPU/GPU, most of it spilling over the die. Replaced it with a droplet (the dies were about 0.5 x 0.5 cm) coolermaster high performance and it's now at 85 C down from 95 C under load. Not bad since max fanspeed kicks in at 85 C so it does hit 87 C from time to time before the fan hits full speed.
MSi was complete overkill with the paste. I think they use the credit card method during assembly :/
I have noted over time the with spread vs droplet, is with the droplet method, it still has a moist center vs the spread where it is dried and caked out.

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely stress the MSI beyond belief as well to make sure everything is solid. Look at the cooling system, in more detail, it doesn't seem as bad as it may look.

The cooling system is good. Been folding almost 24/7 for the past 2 days and temps are nailed onto 85 C. My only complaint with mine is that the vents below the fan aren't as big as the fan itself :/ It's just begging to be modded haha.
Anyway dot vs spread is like night and day. Just remember that less is more here. On mine (555m) I used a drop smaller the size of a pinhead. Buy some of the stuff that comes in a syringe. And if you do open yours up.. Do they use Frozr fans on their gaming laptops? xD
So I want a new laptop for fragaplooza this year. I got a bunch of OT days in for picking one up. They have a sale going on where this is:

Ahhh!!!! I'm so excited.
Spending twice as much for a sager that's got over twice the graphics power? I'd go for the Customized and newer Sager. A single 570M won't be able to handle the 1080p resolution terribly well. One 6970M is a bit faster than a 570M and I couldn't manage most games on absolute maximum settings @ 1920x1200.
As good of a deal as that is, I'd go for the Sager you had planned. If you can pay for a new machine that's up to date and features expansion options like the Clevo machines do, trust me, you'll want it. Just to not this, the GT780 doesn't support the 675M or the 670M, so if you wanted to upgrade, you'd be stuck with the 580M as your ONLY choice since it doesn't identify ATI cards at all unless you bios flash the motherboard.
They're good machines, but the Clevo option is better if you can really afford to shell out for it.
Can you please post the name of the site, or pm me the info, right now i'm looking to buy a laptop in the near future and love to take a look at all the options, thanks in advance
It is memory express. Now and then they have clearance deals but they are in house only.
But anyways, i agree but i don't game at such high resolution nor highest possible.settings. 1024x600 works for me. Too many pixels and you lose the accuracy and precision from quick movements . I find it much easier to control . I will be using a custom bios and overclock it to 580m performance.
yeah i find my self running my games at slightly lower resolution on m laptop for performance reasons too. i run 1200x800 but, run most games at 1200x720, what ever i can do a to squeeze a few more fps. some times i run 1024x768, it handles 4:3 properly too.
