Lens chip?

Thread Starter
I have a lens chip in my stock Canon EOS digital rebel 300D lens, and whenever I take a photo with a very small aperture, f/18-22, I notice the left side of the photo has ghosting and when I zoom in and out, the ghosting moves from top left to bottom left.

Examples:

I aimed at the sun and took a photo. The sun is on the right side, the glare/ghosting is the left.

F stop 5.6

400

F 36
Notice it gets much more noticeable

400

Tried with a different lens, no glare nor any ghosting, no problemos.

Here is the lens chip

400

NO IT IS NOT A WATER DROP.

So I suppose IT IS the lens right? I take normal photos of family and whatnot, it is not noticeable, but taking pics of strong lights and very small apertures, it can get rather annoying.

If that's on the rear element, might as well throw that lens away and buy another.

In the meantime, I must ask why you're shooting at f/22 anyway.

It is in the rear element yes. Really throw away a whole lens because of that? I do have an EF lens 30-80mm, very nice.

Having almost everything in the depth of field is nice sometimes.

Yes, just buy another. The cost to repair that lens would be absurd compared to simply buying one in good condition second hand. Besides, that 35-80mm is pretty junky in itself -- and not very useful as a general purpose zoom for a crop-sensor DSLR such as yours.

f/22 on that tiny sensor is unnecessary, and diffraction is certainly going to be robbing you of sharpness and edge contrast.

so the title of this thread i thought it meant like a computer chip in the lens lol

im with sub on this one as well. you firstly should raise your shutter speed and not shoot f22

and buy another lens used off KEH to save some money. unless that is a lens that is near and dear to your heart its not worth paying to get fixed. and KEH has extremely reasonable prices. honestly i highly suggest trying to pick up another lens from them in BGN condition. BGN condition on KEH is like barely used and in great condition with only minor cosmetic imperfections with clean glass. i would stay away from ugly condition on KEH as that is the beginning of lenses with damage that might affect your iamges

LOL biggrin.gif

Why not raise the the f stop, I mean it's there right? If it gives you the ability to do it, who not do it? But I understand what you are saying.

When I take normal pictures it looks great. I am not going to throw this lens away completely, sorry not everybody here has money floating around. lol. I wont get it fixed either, I will just use it. and what is is damn wrong with the 30-80mm lens?

TBH, those lens were pretty cheap on KEH, I had no idea, but still if I shoot just the sky at f22 I only see dark ghosting, very little, and when I shoot normal pictures with normal exposure, even at f22, I barely get any ghosting, not that BIG of a deal, but yeah it is visible at f16 and up.

Boy, you sure have a funny way of asking for help. It's not a very sharp lens, as it was a low-budget consumer-grade zoom included with cheap film Rebels back in the early 90s. It also makes for an awkward focal length on digital (1.6x) Canon bodies.

It's very evident how much contrast is being lost in that entire lower left 1/3 of the frame. If you're shooting blank sky at f/22 though, perhaps it's not the lens we should be worried about.

Why are you so mean dude?

I just wanted to show the pics and seek help from this forum and understand if the glare whatever was actually from the lens chip? I had to show that it was visible at a very low aperture value.
Sorry that you have such great experience with photography, just don't act like you weren't a noob once too.

Okay I am not sure I understand, THAN EXPLAIN! Is this forum for help, than help me.

Thanks for your great help

Yes the problems you are having are from the chip.

And there is no point in shooting f36 unless you have a specific reason to. You lose so much contrast and sharpness from defraction. It's like shooting iso 6400 during the day, just cause you can doesn't mean you should.
