970 i7 @ 4.7 Ghz (on Auto Settings) Asus Rampage Formula III - Page 3

I will certainly try that program IBT. Even if it crashes in IBT at least its stable enough for gaming @ 5Ghz and in itself is phenomenal for a 970 i7. Honestly after 4.7 Ghz there is not much of a difference in min fps in gaming and its not worth the extra heat and voltage. I only need 1.45v or so for 4.7Ghz but for every 100 mhz after that you have to increase voltage A LOT. For 5 Ghz to run cool under 80c on prime 95 I have to keep my radiator in the ac vent cooled very well. For gaming @ 5Ghz it doesnt get too hot you could easily skip the AC cooling. Its the cpu stress tests like p95 etc that really generate a ton of heat at that speed and voltage. I will try and report back my results for IBT when I can get the AC running again full load. I am defintely looking forward to possibly upgrading to the 3960x and overclocking that to see if GTA4 min fps on max settings will improve. Such terrible poorly coded games like these love cpu and gpu power.

Can you fill out your rigbuilder so that we can get a better idea of your system? You said that you are seeing 80C at nearly 1.7 volts and 5ghz? Since you are not stress testing, this 80c is your idle temperature? rofl.

You are seriously cooking your chip. If you are getting 80C idle temps, dont run any stress tests- especially IBT. Itll hit tjmax in a hurry. I imagine youll be in the market for Ivy Bridge soon.

No sir. Idle temp at 5ghz with ac- blowing on radiator is 35-40c. Load temp @ 5ghz with p95 is around 80c with ac blowing on radiator. I will attempt ibt when i get a chance to turn the ac on when nobody is home.

Beefdog, no I run stock 24/7. For testing purposes I overclocked. As I said not much of a difference between 4.7 and 5 Ghz. Not worth the extra voltage and temp.

Prime95 at 93*C you don't want to run IBT, you'll bust 100*C in a few seconds.

Runs pretty hot have to keep radiatior over the AC vent with the AC on full blast.... I get my temps down under 80 then. I cannot overclock anymore because 200 is my max bclk!

I don't think 200 is your max blck.

Both my ud3r and classy did 250 blck, but of course this is with sub-0 thumb.gif

ABS.exe i fixed that problem, its under 80c on p95 with the radiator in the ac vent. IBT could be worse havent tried it yet. dhenzjhen, I am a noob at overclocking. I am sure you are correct, but as far as I know I could only do 200 blck. I do not think I need to push the 970 i7 past 5 Ghz....

Guys I got my rigbuilder up...

do you have a link to an actual CPU-Z validation, and not just a jpeg?

While I do believe it is possible to boot to 4.7 with an i 970, I find it highly unlikely that it is as stable as you say it is. Just curious on what your actual setup is.

thats a great chip mine does 4.8 under water at 1.46v i think its been a while scince i looked. You have an amazing combo there your not gonna get much gain by moving to ivy (20%) at best. do you have a ssd as that will amke it feel snappier. Your sli 680's and that chip should be fine. i would say try and atleast go 1600 ram with low timings. Its a standard now and there very cheap so thats your best bet

not to thread jack but im looking into selling my board and chip after this weekend. i wanna see what she can do under ln2 at the lan event

it is more then possible witha golden chip. I mean i did have 960mm of rad space but temps were fine adn the chip is a beat. Im sure his chip can do it i believe. althoufh a true validation would be nice
