Should I get an aftermarket cooler for my 670?

Thread Starter
I have a reference 670 and under load it'll get upwards or 80-85c. Would it be a good idea to get an aftermarket cooler for my card to help lower the temp??

I would recommend the Accelero Xtreme III.

The Accelero Xtreme range have always impressed me with their cooling and their quietness thumb.gif

before you go with a aftermarket cooler have you changed your fan curve at all? the stock auto kind of sucks when i changed mine i went from mid 80s to lower 70s

Well,it would be a good idea, but make sure to know what you're doing,do some research, prepare well, and have all the right tools you need.Keep in mind,it can end up being a very risky job,but if performed properly,a very rewarding one too.If you're up to it,go with AXP III,linked above...

Still,my experience with aftermarket coolers wasn't pleasant.About a month ago,I tried to install AXP on my reference Zotac 580 GTX.As I was removing the reference cooler, but one of the screwheads got stripped.I tried removing it with pliers, and trying multiple screwdrivers, but in the end,my hand slipped,I scratched the PCB,and killed the card.If I thought of drilling the screw out, none of it would happen...

Of course,voided warrantly,replaced the card with 670 GTX DC2...

I don't understand why you people are recommending the AXP III. You have an enormous cooler for a PCB that is already tiny as hell. So in addition to dwarfing the pcb, you would also have the extra weight of the cooler hanging off the end which would severly bend the pcb. You're also putting a 300watt cooler on a video card that barely exceeds 200. Its just extra money for nothing of significant return

Agreed, I have AXP III sitting here. I used to have on my gtx 480 and you could tell it was putting some serious strain on the PCB. I would imagine it's not too good for the PCI express slot either.

Because they work.

I have had AXP coolers on my cards since my GTX 275. I have had no issue with mounting or PCB warp and have always been impressed with their cooling power.

As to extra money for no significant return, that is a matter of opinion. I much rather have my card folding at 58c than 80c.

So you had no PCB warping with a 10+ inch long (thats what she said) pcb instead of a 6 to 7~ish inch pcb on the 670 with a three fan cooler. Not to mention I have the twin turbo 2 and temps don't exceed 50c @ 28c ambient. Even with the twin turbo 2, I can see the PCB bending. If it was a longer and HEAVIER cooler, I wonder what that must look like. For what you can get at a much lower price, it indeed is extra money for no significant return.

I used to have a 4870x2 and an aftermarket cooler was a must on those cards. I had an accelero extreme and was very pleased with it. At 100% fan speed it's barely audible and performs really well. I wouldn't be surprised if you dropped to the low 50s with this cooler. If you're willing to spend 120$ for a cooler than I say go for it, it's a really good cooling solution. Cheers thumb.gif

Edit: Forgot to mention you should use an addition mounting mechanism to hold the card in place because the card gets heavy and it applies pressure on the pcie slot. Zip ties are pretty darn cheap and work just fine. Good Luck!
