Terrible fps in DayZ mod?

I've been getting horrible performance in the DayZ mod and was just wondering if it was an issue on my end or if it was just the mod. The version i'm running is 1.7.1.5 and have been getting 15-50 fps. It seems to drop even lower in towns. Also I tried the first level in the campaign of arma 2 and it was dropping to around 25 fps at certain points. I checked the system requirements for Arma 2 and Arma 2 OA and my specs seem to exceed those. Another thing I checked was the percentage of my cpu that was being used and it said 30% so I don't know if that might be part of the issue. Please let me know if it's my system or something with the game that's causing these issues. Here are my specs:
-AMD Phenom II x6 3.2 GHz
-GTX 580 3gb vram
-8 gb of RAM
-17 free gb of space on my HD

Even though you have 3GBs of vRAM, that is a very low amount of free space to have. Also, Arma 2 is somewhat poorly optimized and difficult to run if you're maxing out certain settings. Lower settings like AA and what not.

Have you tried messing with the settings? Took me like 2 days to figure out the perfect settings/visuals for my game. I have everything maxed with only HDR at normal and object details very low. I do get some drops occasionally but nothing too bad, and very rarely. The game runs smooth 99% of the time.

arma 2 has aboslutely horrible optimisation. i have 2 GTX 570's and have to run the game on the lowest just to achieve 50fps

Arma is set up to where if you have certain settings on "normal" or "low" the game will automatically move processing to the CPU instead of the GPU. Prime example is the poster above me with SLI 570's achieving 50 FPS on the lowest settings...

I suggest you look over your graphics settings and understand what each one does. One thing that can murder you FPS is FOV. If you are having a terrible time with frame rate dial it back to a shorter distance. You really don't need more than 2-3 km.

I am on a 7870 and I get +60 FPS and run v-sync. So, there is no way you shouldn't be getting that with a 580.

The lower you put the settings, the lower the GPU utilization is, but the utilization is never enough for a decent frame rate.

I tried a lot of different settings ranging from them all being maxed out to all at the lowest setting but I still had the same fps in the DayZ mod. I'm assuming it must be something with the mod. I tried the campaign again and at the normal preset It never dropped below 50 fps but the only part I played was the part on the aircraft carrier. Thanks for all the input but I guess i'll just have to wait and hope they come out with an update to fix this, considering I bought Arma mainly for the DayZ mod. Hopefully Arma 3 is optimized better.

Tried it out but sadly no luck. My game runs fine while I'm in the wilderness but as soon as I move toward and into towns my fps drops. In Cherno and Electro, my fps drops by at least half. It'll even drop to around 20 fps or lower after staying in the town for a while. I can name several times when I've died just because of lag. This is so frustrating considering this is one of my favorite games.

I've been playing DayZ and it has been playable but i'm just frustrated with the results I've been having. I have all of my settings at low or disabled plus I put view distance at 600 and the game still can drop below 20 in the towns. Also I overclocked my cpu to 3.5 instead of 3.2.. I just don't understand how I could be having so many problems with this mod even after Rocket put out several performance patches. Does anyone know if there is any other way to boost performance? Is this normal to be getting because I know I don't have the best cpu but I still fell like this shouldn't be happening.
