Gaming Laptop to last under $1000 ?

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
I am trying to find the right laptop to buy, at home dad and don't want all the cables of a desktop, something I can move around in the house, trying to get something that will last a few years something like:

2012: can play all demanding games on high resolution (not ultra high).
2013: should be able to play most demanding games in medium resolution.
2014: most likely be able to play most demanding games in low resolution.

Mainly right now for Diablo 3, WoW (maybe if I go back) and eventual insane 3D games that comes out.

Now I know it's a high demand for the price, would prefer new but used/refurb would do too.

**************************************************
What is your maximum budget?
==>A: Around $1,000 (less is better as long as it can do what I need), up to $1,200 if it's something just insane..

What country are you in?
==>A: USA

What will be the uses of this laptop?
==>A: Gaming mainly, every other thing I might use it for can be handled by a gaming pc.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
==>A: No

What screen size do you require?
==>A: Would really prefer 17"+ unless the price is below $800 so I can hookup a big screen.

What screen resolution do you require?
==>A: 1920 would be great, same thing as screen size though.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
==>A: Prefer New, but ok with either.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
==>A: Doesn't matter that much, am almost always next to an outlet (let's say 2 hours min ?)

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
==>A: Diablo 3 and other demanding 3D games

What operating system do you need? (if any)
==>A: Would prefer Win 7 but not 100% req.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
==>A: gaming otherwise no pref.

How much hard drive space do you need?
==>A: would like 500gb min, unless there is a second empty spot which would also be insanly great for ssd boot.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
==>A: Webcam a plus but not a need.

Is there anything else we need to know?
==>A: As I said up there, trying to find something that will either last 3 years for gaming or can be upgraded as I go (video card, second HD, maybe even E-GPU).
******************************************************************
Been looking a lot for the last few days but I don't have as much time as I used to to compare 50 diff machines, GPU's, etc.., I would really appreciate the help!

I doubt you'd be able to game reasonably at 1080p on a laptop GPU for under $1000. I'd recommend a desktop; I can play just about anything on high at 1080p for just over $1000.

Just to compare a good gaming laptop and an average gaming desktop in 3d mark 06
My system ~22000 3d marks
A laptop with the same CPU and GPU as the one I listed got  ~16000 3d marks

I found this on Newegg; its GPU is pretty good.

If it's for "around the house" and you want a laptop for gaming for less wires then I would honestly suggest rethinking the whole laptop thing. Unless its absolutely mandatory that you must be portable then it's simply a waste of money for the performance. $1000 might yield "ok" performance for you now but it will quickly become obsolete and will regret it. Trust me, I watched all of my college buddies waste their grad money on laptops that they quickly regretted. In my opinion, either spend a giant wad of cash on a mega laptop or just get a proper desktop for way less. Hell, you could stick it all in a very small package and with good cable management the wires wont be an issue....

Sager NP6175 would be the only viable option in your price range, but it's $1100 with Windows 7 and an i7 quad.

Otherwise, if it's predominantly going to be used in say, living room, bedroom, den; assuming you have an LCD monitor to hook it up to in each of those rooms, you could just run a Wireless Display adapter to the TV, leave your desktop in one room, and also bring a wireless keyboard and mouse, and perhaps wireless speakers (HDMI cable does audio+ video.. so you could just hook speakers up to your monitor, done).

Intel WiDi adapter/receiver (needed for each monitor, but maybe some exist with multiple inputs, if you wanted to run lots of cable). http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F7D4501-ScreenCast-Adapter-Wireless/dp/B0055R0YK4

Intel 6230 wifi card (you'd also need a mPCIe to PCIe adaptor, like $10). http://www.amazon.com/6230-IEEE-802-11n-draft-Bluetooth/dp/B004PG08SE

I thought about that and it's true that I could easily build a great desktop for that much, but living in a 2 story house, being able to take it with me upstairs is almost a must for me (to be close to the kids). Don't get me wrong, I don't get hours on ends to play but I just want to enjoy the few that I do have to myself. Right now I have an old AMD X2 P320 with 4DDR3 and it's at the end of its use (2 years later). I'd like to find something good for now and that can "do" for 2013 at least.

I did think about an all-in-one but prices are just as high as laptop and haven't seen one with dedicated video card as of yet and that would still be quite big to go up and down stairs with biggrin.gif

It's a nice machine for sure and a contender, I most likely can do $1100 , I just would prefer not to smile.gif (depending how much I can sell our old laptop, NV53A, hoping around $250-300). Also WIDI receivers have too much lag for gaming sadly.

7670m should handle diablo 3 and wow nicely and for only $399.

and you have $600 left over to build a real gaming rig or to buy more ram or swap out the hard drive and add an ssd.

Laptops and Netbooks section. Please stop doing this... We don't care about this. They wouldn't ask about a $1000 laptop if they intended to spend $400 on a laptop and $600 upgrading their desktop. Common sense is requested by most of the people on this forum. rolleyes.gif

As for the OP, I have to say that the best bet you could hope for would be to look for a refurbished "new", or previous generation, laptop with a Core i5 and a GTX 570M/670M/660M. That'll yield you probably around where your budget is.

However, if that isn't possible then anything with a GT 650M that has GDDR5 Memory will do you just fine. Also, the Core i5 is plenty fast and you won't need anything faster than the i5 anyway. thumb.gif

I recently purchased the Lenovo Y570 and I am very happy with. I am at work so I can’t post all the specs but...it has an i5 dual core w/ a gt555 optimus gpu. It is has amazing battery life (6 hours) since you can disable the dedicated gpu and it can play new games (skyrim) with good quality. It is not 1080p though which I see you have as a requirement. I have not looked at there updated models but Ivy Bridge and the Nvidia 6 series just came out so they are probably a little more capable than mine and maybe offer 1080p. My only complaint so far is that the usb 3.0 plugs are on the right side and I use a lap desk with a pull out tray for a mouse. So when using a hard drive my hands are somewhat blocked but this is not a major concern by any means. Last thing I forgot to add, the speakers are amazing on this laptop. Granted they are still laptop speakers but the quality is top notch.
