Just a question, does the lens make picture quality better/worse? Or does it only affect zoom/closeups?
The lens used has a huge amount to do with image quality, like Sub said. That being said, the 55-250 is a great telephoto lens on a budget.
x3

my 55-250 was great when I had it.

Hm, alright. Seems like I'll be dropping another ~$200 in the future haha.

What do you guys think of the Sony Nex 5N? Would the T2i still be better?

It really depends what you want to do.

Snapsort has the T2i coming in ahead, but if you're only doing photography and dont care about video, then I feel like the Nex 5N has some better traits (better color depth, lower noise, 2 stops better ISO (up to 25,600), better dynamic range, shoots faster, 25 focus points, and more fps.

looks like if you can find it the T2i kit (with 18-55) is going for ~$447 at target. Stock is getting very limited and alot of stores are sold out. Worth a search on their site in your area though.

Yup.

Not too long ago I found it at my local Target for $500.

From a former 50D owner -- do not buy one. It's likely too large, heavy and overpriced for your needs, OP. The T2i has a better sensor anyway, and in a smaller package.

I live in Canada so there are no Target stores here ):

I'm terrible with buying things, I always want one step higher tongue.gif

Found this site and it's amazing for finding the cheapest Canadian pricing.

Now I'm stuck between the Nikon D5100 and the Canon T3i (I know the T2i is pretty much the same thing, but I think the articulating screen would be useful.)

snapsort has the D5100 on top, but just wondering if anyone has had experiences with both of them, or one.

Also, should I just pick up the body and buy a single good lens? Do you guys find that you still use the 18-55mm lens after purchasing other ones?

D5100 has a slight edge in image quality, but I strongly encourage you to go physically handle both and let the ergonomics be the differentiating factor. The only negative to entry level Nikon bodies is that they do NOT have a motor built into the body for older screw-drive (AF-D, AF-I) lenses, so you will have to buy AF-S variants. It may sound intimidating to a beginner, but it's not that bad. Go pick em up, play with em, shoot em -- get comfortable with one, and buy it.

^ x 1000. The D5100 is a great entry level offering, but if it feels like a plastic bag of broken glass in your hands, you're not going to want to shoot with it. The Canon T3i and the Nikon D5100 really do feel different enough that it warrants picking up and handling each one and seeing which one is more comfortable in your hands.

Also, don't let the articulating screen be a factor in your decision. It's a neat feature for sure, but realistically is it worth the extra money for the (potentially, of course) handful of times you'd end up using it? That money could be spent on any number of things..
