Upgrade to 990FX or wait for "Piledriver"?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so Im looking at doing a motherboard upgrade to my rig for the purpose of sli and better over-clocking capabilities on my FX-6100. But my question is... Should I just go ahead and upgrade to a 990FX board or wait for Piledriver to come out and get one of the many new boards that are likely to come out along side it? Thanks!

(Note: Im not looking to upgrade to the Piledriver CPU just wondering about the situation Mobo-wise) thumb.gif

wait until Piledriver hits. What you have now is enough until then. My advice: wait. wink.gif

From what I currently know, the 10-series chipset which will most likely come along with Piledriver will have new features such as two 16x lanes for CrossFire (and I assume SLI), native USB 3.0, and more SATA 6Gb/s RAID controllers.

If those aren't features of interest to you, the current 990FX is fine.thumb.gif

Correct. There really is no need for the10-series chipset yet. Vishera/Piledriver will be evolutionary so I'm figuring ~15% improvement over the FX CPUs, which is a nice performance bump IMO.

Plus The only difference between the two so far is 1070FX has native USB 3.0 on it.

Personal opinion, a 990FX chipset is all you need to get really good overclocks with it at nice low voltages. Plus they're fun to overclock.

If you want a performance difference over your FX-6100 I would go back in time and get a Phenom II x6 and overclock that.

So my opinion, new board and overclock the FX-6100 to its max thumb.gif That's me though
