Well, no tears, just a bit of rage instead. I put the Mint Debian iso onto a USB stick, and it threw a kernel panic on booting (something to do with "can't open /scripts/casper"). I think this is because Mint Debian 64bit isn't compatible with USB install. I'm going to try burning a good old-fashioned DVD tonight, failiing that I'll have to download a new iso

If you planned on going (Mint) Debian I would have just used unetbootin to make a usb of the net install (offical debian), that's what I'm installing right now. Ubuntu 12.04 has a bug with wine that currently doesn't let my play TF2 after the update. So I'm going to get Debian running and see how that goes. I'm quite content with this distro lol

[edit] Praise!!! They have the 302.17 drivers in experimental, this is SWEEEEEET!!!!!

.....well that didn't work.

I burned the iso onto a DVD, and it booted into a live environment. Sweet! Partitioned my space as suggested (with only 256Mb for /boot), installed GRUB to the MBR (presumably - it said /dev/sda), and installed the system. Rebooted, and an warning comes up on login about permissions for $HOME, and the session wouldn't be retained. So, I check my /home folder, and it's actually "/home/username" (username kept private here), instead of just /home. I guess it's normally symlinked, or otherwise hidden/abstracted? Anyone, it was owned by root, not by my user. Various combinations of sudo, su, logging in as root, even dropping to a low runlevel and logging in as root, wouldn't let me chown my home folder. A quick Google around talks about using NTFS for /home under Ubuntu, and that it doesn't work as NTFS doesn't have the right attributes to get the permissions working right (something to do with links or Unix permissions). I guess the system defaulted to root during the install, and chown doesn't have the power to modify an NTFS folder.

TL;DR - using NTFS for /home doesn't work.

I reinstalled using ext4 for /home, and it's all good. I'll have to work out some other method of sharing data between Windows & Linux. For now, I'll stick with what I've got, just need to "pretty up" GRUB and I'm settled

I don't know why I didn't think of this before!!!!!! Apologies to anybody that was suggesting this earlier, but I mis-read what you meant at the time. Now, I'm thinking of creating the lightest possible Arch (or maybe Slack, for stability) install in a VM, solely for the purpose of mounting my /home partition, and sharing it via samba (unless there's a better method using Virtualbox directly), then accessing it as a network drive from Windows. It's more heavyweight than using an FS driver, but in some ways I prefer that as the Windows ext drivers seem a bit "alpha", and I'd rather not entrust my filesystem to that kind of quality.

To be honest, if you're going to to that then you might as well just run Linux from a VM or build a file server. The kind of half-way house suggested in that article strikes me as the worst the both worlds

True, but building a fileserver costs money, and I much prefer running Linux natively. I like booting the computer and ending at Linux, rather than booting into Windows, and then having to open Virtualbox, then booting the VM. I'm lazy at heart - if I went the VM route, chances are I'd just say "sod it" and open up a Windows web browser or office app rather than booting a VM.

I don't entirely agree with the article, but I like the idea (hence why I want to adapt it and build a minimal Slack VM)

Why didn't you mount the ntfs home partition rw when you cannot change the folder permission? Did you tried this? BTW. when you have Linux in a VM you can also make backups which is great advantage over a dual boot. I'm not trying to convince you but this is what I think because I also have a dual boot and a VM Linux.

I'd assumed Mint would always mount /home as rw? To be honest, I didn't try it, and it's too late now as I've reformatted at ext4 now. I guess I'm happier like this (better piece of mind, using a native Linux FS rather than NTFS)

No. Sometimes I need to mount root rw with grub to make it boot but you can be right.
