XSPC raystorm orientation

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Im installing the xspc raystorm water block. The "in" and "out" holes on the block are positioned a bit inconveniently for me. I want to install the inside part of the block upside down so that the "in" hole will be on the left side. Is this ok or does it HAVE to be placed the right way up? also, do i need to clean off and re-apply thermal paste everytime I remove the block?
No problem, you will be fine thumb.gif

Edit: yes, me at least, i reapply tim everytime ti reseat the block.

In my experience with the Rasa block I did have 2-3 degrees better when right side up compared to rotated 90 degress (so that the "in" hole is above "out). I think its due to the bow orientation.

@OP, no problem with mounting the block upside down.

That ties in with what Skinnee found during his testing. He surmised that the best performance is with the micro channels horizontal (i.e. running from the IO to the RAM slots, rather than from the PCIe to the top of the board).

Can't seem to find the link at the moment.

Micro-channel orientation doesnt matter on the Rasa though, its symetric: http://martinsliquidlab.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/xspc-rasa-08.jpg?w=614 . I know raystorm doesn't have the cross pattern so perhaps its a bit of both channel orientation and bow position over the cores.(edit: or maybe my mounts were just bad, I am an amateur here tongue.gif). Either way the difference is no more than 2C so just do whats convenient.

Sorry, didn't read the "Rasa" bit.

Interesting; the flow will still be predominantly going in the same direction as if there were micro channels, so maybe it is more to do with fluid flow direction?

As far as I know the bow on the block is 3D - a sphere rather than a cylinder - so it should be symetrical on both axes and therefore not make a difference.

Of course there is always a difference between mounts using the same orientation, how many times did you test this?
