Using this currently for WinAMP. ASIO is too problematic... might have something to do with the 6 year old plugin frown.gif

Have you tried the kernel streaming plug-in for Winamp?

So how high of a bitrate should you use? Is 320kbps okay, or do you need to go lossless? The fact of the matter is that it's very difficult to hear the difference between a lossless file and a 320kbps MP3. You'd need some serious high-end gear, a very trained ear, and a certain type of music (like classical or jazz) to hear the difference. For the vast majority of people, 320kbps is more than adequate for listening. You don't need to pain yourself with finding lossless copies of all your favorite songs.

So, in other words, it's not impossible for you to hear the difference. Just hard. Like I said before. Chances are it's placebo... but maybe not.

The guy at Lifehacker couldn't tell the difference. I personally can and I only have an XtremeGamer and some £40 Sennheiser headphones. With something this subjective and down to the individual it's not possible to say 100% "you can't"...

Well, I already agreed with you that it was possible, just hard (and lifehacker isn't the only source I can come up with that says so). Obviously you can hear the difference. I get it.

But it still depends on the players too.

Theoretically, there should be zero difference for playback (on Windows OS's later than XP). ASIO is only used to lessen latency, and that only matters for recording.

If you have an Windows OS that's later than XP, WASAPI is fine. really!

How so?

And what card/drivers are you using?

ASIO, kernel streaming, and WASAPI exclusive mode all sound identical if supported correctly. Support is all over the place though and I use ASIO because it tends to be the most universally supported of them.

If you can make use of exclusive mode. Shared mode still sucks.

ummm about that MP3 vs AAC debate.....

anyone have an article or something that explain the differences between the 256kbps AAC music in iTunes and the 320kbps MP3 in Google Music ???

I want to start my legal (lol xD ) music library......and Google Music and iTunes are like the best option...but I want to stick with just one....

WASAPI still resamples but ASIO resets and forces the audio interface to work on a specific sample rate.
