Simple, there isn't enough motivation for the ISPs to compete in such a way that it benefits us. There are also areas where cable may exist but not DSL or fiber, and vice versa, so competition isn't possible in the first place.

The US isn't that bad. Try the UK. Some parts of Scotland are still on dial up....

sorry if this is a stupid question but is it possible to create something that can generate unlimited bandwidth? Or is it just a hardware restriction?

So, do ya think that 320GB/s is fast enough for cloud GPUs? (Think big...)

Neutrinos exist but sadly are not FTL.

I remember an interview with dice where they talked about the limitations imposed by bandwidth and that it's hard to make MP work due to everything thats happening that is actually game changing. For instance, A building being blown up has to update across all these different lines as fast as possible because it actually affects gameplay. So with speeds this fast, or even at 1gbps, not only would games be instantaneous, but they could benefit a lot with that restriction gone. I am by no means a developer or even very smart at networkings, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but surely this would have some benefits for online gaming?
It is not really a thoughput issue.... check your network traffic playing BF3... it is not that much.

Sync so many thing plus the different latency is the hard part.
Once again...

Why would ISP's upgrade their service when they can continue to increase service costs year after year while offering you less and less citing they are "overloaded because of too much downloading"

Instead of blaming the ISPs look into things like net neutrality and the affect they have on the industry and how they budget for the future.
