960T or 8120?

Thread Starter
My friend and I are building a server with desktop parts and can't decide on a processor. It needs to be a good overclocker because we're going to water cool it. Original choice was 960T, but I've been thinking an 8120 might be better. My problem with the 8120 is that it's not a true 8 core and that the power draw skyrockets when overclocking. I like that its memory controller supports 1866MHz RAM though. The 960T however can unlock to 6 true cores and doesn't have such a high power draw. I need some input as I've never owned either of these.

The water cooling loop will include a triple radiator and the system will have 32GB of 1600/1866MHz RAM. It will be powered by a Corsair HX650.

I'm going to say 960T here..Higher IPC..runs cool..very snappy cpu...clocks pretty good,too.

Yeah, it's cheaper too. I've heard of it easily OC'ing to 4.5GHz with the hidden cores unlocked.

prolly 4.4 underwater. i would go with the 8120 since it was designed as a server processor in the first place - if i am not mistaken. the zosma unlocked and overclocked will draw about the same power as a mildly oc'ed 8120.

do not buy the 960T hoping it will unlock. still a good processor as a quad, though.

EDIT: the 8120 can be had for a mere $160. i think the 960Ts are pretty much gone.

Here is the thing, will this server be on idle or full load most of the time?

At idle, FX consumes less power.
At full load, 960T consumes less power.

Also what will you be doing on this server?

960T is more suited for you than FX in this case. FX is more suited for something idle like file server, or things like virtualization where more threading is desired.

I have both chips and use the 960t for my file server and the FX8120 for my gaming box. If you have a Microcenter nearby grab a FX8120 for $150 and $40 off a MB like the Sabertooth FX990. I honestly do not see any difference between the two and the power savings is not huge. What I can tell you is my 960t unlocked would not go above 4Ghz and even then it was not stable, my FX runs happily at 4.6Ghz, both are water cooled. I would go the cheapest route between the two personally as I doubt you will see any difference.
