Overall temp much higher than core temps?

Thread Starter
Sorry for the really noob question but I have just started my overclocking of my new water cooled 3930K system.

On speedfan and CPUID Hardware Monitor and CoreTemp I am getting the same result that the overall CPU temp is being reported as 80C-85C where as the cores are reporting:
idle: 30C-40C
load: 50C-60C

yet on either idle or load the temp is being reported as 80C-85C.. What gives? Have I set smothing up wrong? (I do have a Koolance PMP-450 pump and it has a PWM feedback which I have put on the CPU_FAN header and so if the pump fails then hopefully the reported pump speed will go to zero and the system will auto shutdown.. The Fan speed reported by the pump is a crazy 4500rpm's or so.)

Here is the chart in speedfan:

You can see the idle and loads:
477

And here is under load for 30 minutes or so:
474

And here is the starting overclock which isn't that aggressive..
390

Am I doing something wrong? Have set up something wrong on the hardware? Or in the BIOS?

If it helps I am using a RIVE motherboard with GSkill mem but for now my memory speeds have been turned way down... (While I determine the stable CPU overclocks...)

Thanks,
jas

Since it's the same while idling as it is under load, I'm going to say that it can be ignored because it sounds like that particular sensor is not working.

However, all that really matters are the core temps. They're fine, so you're in the clear.

What does Real Temp 3.70 show you?

Thanks for the reply! Using RealTemp under load I get the following:
418

The overall temp being so high in the other programs means I guess I have set something up wrong in BIOS or hardware... It would be nice to know what is going on here...

Cheers & Thanks,
Ja

Also strangely RealTemp is only showing the four cores of the 3930K and not the six cores it has...

Oh, I think you have to either change Real Temp's settings or use RealTempGT.exe (which came with the download).

Anyway, there's nothing set incorrectly in the BIOS. I mean, there's nothing that would affect it. It's likely just a faulty sensor. Although, don't worry about it because the only temps that matter are the core temps. They're good, so you're all set.

Ahh.. yes switching to RealTempGT.exe showed all the cores. Thanks! With the faulty sensor do you think that is in the chip itself or on the RIVE motherboard. (I would guess the chip itself...)

Thanks,
Jas

It's funny because I've often wondered why there's even a sensor for that. I mean yeah there's the T-Case Thermal Specification, but I don't know of any time where it matters when the cores are what generate the heat. Well, I suppose it's to check where you're at in comparison to the T-Case Thermal Spec, but even then I don't get it.

Oh well. smile.gif
