So which GPU should i get? the HD 7950, GTX 670 or the HD 7970?
before you will all say the 670, ill introduce you to my options and their prices:

1) Sapphire HD 7950 950 Mhz Edition (Dual X); Price ~510$
2) Asus HD7950-DC2T-3GD5; Price ~520$
3) Zotac GTX 670 (reference model); price ~570$
4) Sapphire HD 7970 (reference model); price ~585$
5) Gigabyte GTX 670 (GV-N670OC-2GD); price ~585$

and if you think these prices are crazy, you havent seen the GTX 680 prices...

*The above prices are converted from NIS (aka Israel Currency) and they might change in the future (as of now the currency exchange of USD to NIS is about ~3.9, a month ago it was a little above 3.8 and hopefully till July it wont rise too much)

so which would you recommend the most? (btw, is it true the you can unlock shaders on the first Sapphire card?)

Can you link the sites that are giving you those prices? I would go with the ref. 7970 but that should be only between $460 and $500.

i warned you in the title about the pricing didnt i?
I live in Israel, where there is a minimum tax to everything of 16%. additionally our products are probably imported from the EU which is more tax, our government also asks a business tax (i guess this is everywhere, but the point is that there are a few good taxes to pay), the USD changes can influence the pricing sometimes (ie to get stuck on high price) and lets not forget that the store needs to make some profit.

if you are interested: (these sites are in hebrew, so ill redirect the links right to the GPU section. prices from the highest to lowest in NIS, 3.9 exchange USD to NIS. these are the two major retailers in israel, with "lowest prices")

At those prices, either the Dual-X 7950 or the reference 7970. Dual-X if you're sensitive to fan noise, 7970 if not.

the biggest reason im considering the dual X is (from sapphire's website): "The new design is HD 7970 class that enables more head room for overclocking." (should OC well)

and i remember someone here or at another forum stated that it might be possible to unlock shaders on this card, and some had the 7970 shader count on GPU-Z.

There is no unlocking the 7950's, sorry. That Dual X will most likely overclock real well, but will still come behind an OC'd reference 7970. For power get the 7970, for silent action and tighter budget get the Dual X 7950.

Thanks, i am still not sure because of my budget (im funded, long story, and its still not 100% closed).

there is also a Sapphire HD 7950 reference model (with the hated blue PCB) for the price of about ~470$. any additional opinions ?

off toipc:
can anyone tell me if this card, R7970-2PMD3GD5, comes with red PCB or black one? (whenever i try to search it is never clear which)

I wouldn't go for a reference 7950. It's more or less OK for some overclocking, but struggles with overvolting.

I'm under the impression the red PCB reference 7970s were engineering samples, so my guess is the card you mention comes with a black PCB.

Thanks, its just hard for me to believe that a red PCB 7970 would exist on the market and let alone sell.
if it turns out a black PCB ill consider strongly to purchase it, it has the same price as the 7950 950Mhz Ed. (ill ask the retailer, even though they mostly know nothing at all about pc hardware, sad sad reality sad-smiley-002.gif)

No you can't unlock those shaders. Having said that the sapphire HD 7950 950 Mhz edition is really a HD 7950 chip on a HD 7970 PCB with the same 8pin + 6 pin power. very good overclocker with a 2nd BIOS which enables more aggressive overclocking.very good cooler. this card does 1100 Mhz at stock volts and 1200 Mhz with a bit of voltage tweaking. there is more posted about this card by user sonda5

http://www.overclock.net/t/1196856/official-amd-radeon-hd-7950-7970-owners-thread/11260#post_17357026

you could ask him for his feedback on the card. I strongly recommend this card even if it was priced similar to GTX 670. as its cheaper its a no-brainer. thumb.gif
