Cooler Master RMA replacement - Page 8

Thread Starter
Just chatted with rep. They are saying that GTX560ti (or not ti can't remember) with Phenom runs OK on 1000W unit.

They are still sending me new SP 850W asap.

Don't get me wrong here, their support is good. It is just their line up of PSUs and their (PSU) replacement policy that's bad.

Each psu I sent was replaced within a week so far.

They told me that they will post test results of 1000W here, and try to ship replacement today if they have enough time (UPS picks up around 4:30PM from them from what I know).

Couldn't ID it myself because the model code produced little via searching, but here's the label contents:
RS-380-PCAP w/ Passive PFC
50-60hz, 100-127V ~8A, 200-240V ~5A
12V1 @ 10A, 12V2 @15A, 5V @21A, 3.3V @22A, 5VSB @2A, -12V @0.8A
12V1 + 12V2 combined power shall not exceed 300W
5V + 3.3V shall not exceed 130W
Max output 350W
CE, FCC, CCC

That unit is an old Half-Bridge design from Chicony Power Tech. It's actually only supposed to output 300w; not the 350w that Cooler Master rated it for.

With that said, I've seen no formal analysis of it. It shouldn't blow up on you and the design is modern enough that it doesn't have a -5v rail or massive 5v rail.

Most systems wouldn't push it too hard but I'd honestly throw it to the recycle bin if you can pick up a more modern & efficient PSU.

Interesting. Just as well the old system never drew that much power...

Chicony Power Tech (aka Hipro) isn't a bad brand by any means, but it's up to Cooler Master to put the name & wattage rating on the product.

I'd actually be interested in seeing some internals of the unit if you still have it around. Since it's long run out it's warranty.

More specially, the soldering on the main PCB and perhaps a rundown of components used.

More specially, the soldering on the main PCB and perhaps a rundown of components used.

I don't have a camera handy, but I can give you a brief overview (with my limited PSU knowledge):

ADDA 120mm fan (0.34A)
An average looking transient filtering stage which continues on the PCB (there's a large box-like component off to the side consisting of several heatsinks held together)
105C Teapo primary cap and Teapo secondaries as well (I can't identify the two large caps for PFC as they're wrapped in something)
Two heatsinks (one of which seems to be attached to PFC components, the other seems to be for group regulation of the rails)
One large transformer near the middle and a smaller one (labelled Hipro so you're correct)
Soldering looks average to me, could be better, could be worse

I'll borrow a camera and try to get some pictures tomorrow.

They didn't ship it today either.

I am getting tired of this. If they won't ship it by Monday, I will just buy AX750 or equivalent and end this.

I don't understand why they promise something that they cannot do.

I don't even mind that it may take standard 3 days to ship by their RMA policy, but they should not be so inresponsible

Whats funny too, it their RMA department is down the street from their headquarters. My opinion would be to go else where. They clearly have alot of internal problem and I dont just mean in the RMA dept either. If anyone wants to hear about that issue or 2, PM me.

I should agree about other problems.

Their system is not automated. I have to bug cs everytime to get my tracking number, RMA approval and so on.

Back in February when I bought CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid from CM Store USA, it was exactly the same story. Fedex delivered the package before I got my tracking number lol (and even notification that it was shipped).

EVGA guys were the best from my experience. Corsair also solved my RAM problem in two weeks (the RAM was shipped all the way from Taiwan!).

Logitech did even better job by upgrading G9 to G9x, and providing free return label without me requesting one.

Cooler Master support, on the other hand, wants to help as far as I can tell, but either due to internal problems or something else the reps are not able to do what they promise mad.gif.

Either that or they just pretend...

Hmmm. My first PSU I purchased was a Silent Pro 700w. It did the job, but this makes me feel good about selling it & upgrading to a SeaSonic X 1050 biggrin.gif
Sorry CM, only thing i'll ever purchase from you guys will be cases & maybe a CM Trigger.

As far as I know, CM is not known for their power supplies but for their cases and their cpu coolers.
They make great products in these catagories and are known for having great customer service.

I love CoolerMaster as a company and have owned quite a few of their cases and coolers and have been satisfied with the quality.

I know that the reps that responded in this thread got ripped, but you at least have to give them credit for being here and attempting to do right by their warranty.

My guess is that the op will end up with a better replacement psu that what he originally started with and probably a little extra gift for the trouble and time wasted. Most rma's are never fun, especially when waiting for something that is critical for your system to operate. Customer service goes a long way in this regard. Even good companies with good reputations can sometimes drop the ball.

Good luck to the OP and I hope you get a replacement soon that is satisfactory to you-
