Startup problem

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
I am having a problem... When I start my computer, a screen pops up and ask me to pick which system to start in: Windows(Default) or Windows Professional. If I pick default or let itself pick default another screen pops up and says:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\\system32\\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file

is there a way to set Windows Professional to automatically pop up and not give me a choice? or how do I fix the problem?

LOL, I"m working on it. You have a dual-boot. I think thats what its called, but removing it is kinda dangerous because it doesn't say which one is which when you delete one of the OS's.

Okay here:

1.Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-or-
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2.On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
3.Under System Startup, click Edit.

Under [Boot Loader] leave that untouched
Under [operating system] Erase the operating system that you wanna get rid of.

Example

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\W2KPRO="Micro soft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
or
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINNT="Micros oft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Delete 2000 Professional line. If 2000 Professional was Xp Default

Oh this is easy - But watch what you are doing when you are playing with boot files.

What you do is

Start > Run > msconfig > Boot.INI > Select the OS you want to make default > Set As Default > Change "Timeout" to 3secs (this speeds up the boot process but gives you enough time to open safe mode if need etc)

Good Luck

Lol Mad_Handlez89 got to it before me. , and his is safer than my method, but my method gets rid of the whole option picking screen. His just moves the Default over to the working XP and loads it. If you try my Method be very careful not to delete the working Xp and keeping the broken version. I take no responsibility if you mess up your system. If you do not trust yourself or do not know what your doing go with Mad_Handlez89 version

Just as an aside, I would do it this way too, more or less. And if you have access to two computers, it's not as dangerous. What you would do is find the file boot.ini. It's on the C drive and you can see it by showing protected operating system files. Open it with notepad and copy what you see into a text file (or just backup the boot.ini file to another spot on the HD.) If you mess it up or delete the wrong one, take the hard drive out of the system, hook it up to another working computer, and modify the flie again, using your backup as a template.

But a working windows xp pro boot.ini file should say this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINDO WS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINDOWS="Micr osoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

If the method you have works for you, than don't bother changing it. This is just the permanent fix to get rid of the second OS record.
