Web Design Fundamentals?

Thread Starter
I've messed around a little in web design and I want to know all the best tools to use.

The software and code stuff I use are usually free, except the Adobe software I use that at school.

Okay so I haven't taken any classes for web design but I've figured out that you need to know how to at least read HTML, CSS, Javascript, and PHP. I haven't messed around with actionscript or adobe stuff yet.

I need to know how to utilize content managment systems like wordpress, joomla, or drupal.

A camera with photoshop.

Illustrator and some design skill.

What else do good web developers or designers or whatever use?
Flash CS5 or Catalyst CS5 combined with Illustrator make for good rapid prototyping of the basic navigation.

Okay, I like the sounds of this.

I have never used Flash CS5 or Catalyst CS5. I have visited the adobe site and read some product descriptions, but I still don't understand what these programs do.

Could we go more into what they do?
Flash Professional you have alot more control over everything in general.
Catalyst is a bit more limited but next to no coding needed.

Catalyst sounds sick
Just started using Flash Pro CS6, really digging it. For a long time I stayed away from Flash for many reasons. I'm still getting used to it, as there are some issues I'm having, but I'm slowly learning scripts to solve any issues I may have.

I do wish I knew someone who was more experienced than I was who could guide me along, but googling things has done well enough for now.

ETA: To give you an idea, Flash Pro basically allows you to create a page however you want. There are no need for making tables to place your content around each page. If you want it slightly off center because that's what you like, you can do that.

I thought I had a lot of control with Dreamweaver, but it turns out, I don't. I'm still bound to using tables to make my site.

Personally I think you might be better off spending some time gaining skills in HTML 5 / CSS 3.
These technologies are supported across all platforms, unlike flash which is not supported at all on IOS (iphone, iPad). The canvas element in HTML 5 allows for animated, interactive vector artwork of a similar level to flash, and the new CSS transitions and animations are also quite powerful.

While Flash might not be cross platform to any iOS devices, browsing a full HTML website on a small screen isn't all that easy either. You're better off making a mobile site regardless of what you use to write/create your website.

I found this to be a good read with regard to all the Flash hate around the world. I guess I'm a bastard child for using both together thumb.gif

You can run a conditional for iPhones that will load a static site instead of flash.
