Is it true that the 13 inch 2012 Ivy Bridge MacBook Pro's only have a SATA2 controller?

I've read this in several places...

I doubt it... the Ivy Bridge "Panther Point" chipset supports SATA III. It would be stupid for Apple not to utilize them.

Yes but the controller is implemented on the motherboard of the computer not on the CPU so theoretically they could.

I've read this is the case on the 13's, I think they do it so you will buy the 15 inch or the retina :-(

Just went into my local Apple store.

Checked a brand new 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pro.

Both had the same mechanical HDD.

13 Inch: 3Gbps negotiated link speed.
15 Inch: 6Gbps negotiated link speed.

On the MacBook Air it's 6Gbps for all models (11 and 13)

According to MacRumours Apple intentionally limit it to "save power" more like encourage you to buy a 15...

LOL save power! That's a ridiculous move from Apple IMO... if anything the MacBook air would benefit from saving power (if SATA II actually did save any power that is!!), would it not? Unless you stick an SSD in it, good luck seeing the difference between SATA III and II with a mechanical drive though...

As far as I know the 13" i7 model is the 3520M... which does have HT.

The interface is SATA 6 Gb/s. The drive must only be SATA 3 Gb/s which would make sense with what you're saying.
