I could not agree with this explanation more. I do this sort of thing on the side for a hobby and I won't do it for anything close to free anymore even for my good friends, so I can't imagine not charging an appropriate fee for taking the parts and assembling/delivering a custom solution if it is what you do to pay your bills. I'm not trying to pile on here. apgfeb14 just plain nailed it and I wanted to add my "Here here!"

But again i'm just doing what is asked of me. In all fairness, we didn't just steal the guys quote. The guy's quote only contained specifics for the cpu, the ram was general with the 16gb amount, and a redundant 750w power supply.
Anyhow, if i go through with this, i would appreciate some insight on where to get quality parts and information on RAID.

As an IT worker, I occasionally deal with this undercutting crap that you're doing a fine job of. We will not administrate or support somebody else's hardware unless it was pre-existing. If the IT person who made the quote is smart, he has a similar policy. Ultimately, the client needs to trust the IT staff to do the job from start to finish and not screw around with this price shopping stuff. If your friend doesn't like the quote and can't get a better number from the existing IT staff, he/she needs to find a different IT staff. Honestly, if I quoted someone a server and they came back and did what you're planning on doing, I would drop them as a client. Life is too short.

Coincidentally, we service a major recycler/waste collection company here in California and they use prowaste as well as prosanitation. Both of them have weird compatibility problems with Windows 7 (and have a backend that dates back to at least Windows 98), so we're moving them onto Encore.

1. Dell, HP, etc offer Guaranteed 2hr Onsite, 6hr Repair / 4hr Onsite or NBD Onsite support and parts replacement for the life of the server, can you?

2. This Hardware is WAY Overkill for a small fileserver/sbs setup.

3. Is there any particular reason you are going for redundant Power Supply's at this price point? It would be much cheaper to get non-redundant and buy a spare one from dell/hp or ebay.

4. RAID is not a substitute for a backup. It can and will fail if not properly maintained or if you have bad luck. RAID is just there to help minimize downtime in the event of a minor drive failure, etc.

Below I have Priced out a Mid Range Poweredge T310 Server with SBS 2011 Standard Included, A Managed Switch, a True Hardware RAID Controller, Hotplug Hard Drives, an RD1000 (External HDD Backup Device) and 2 500GB Backup Drives, and Finally a 3 Year NBD Warranty:

Thank you, i'm looking at the quote right now. It seems like a pretty good system.

But isn't 375w to little for all that hardware, also what's the benefit of running raid 1 to raid 5, besides the fact that raid 5 uses 3 hard drives.

1. 375 watts is likely perfectly adequite; they are not running 250 watt gaming graphics cards.

2. RAID 1 will mirror the drive writes, and is a little simpler. RAID 5 will offer significantly larger RAID volumes, but you need at least 3 drives. Usually RAID 1 is used for smaller setups, and situations when there is only space for 2 drives.

That server hardware looks good to me. Software wise, I don't see Server 2008 included. Also I am not sure the switch is a necessary addition, but its only ~$150.

No server 2008 cause it's SBS 2011....

Its a combo deal with switch and RD1000. Cheaper that way.
