7970 Black Screen Crash

Thread Starter
Hi Guys...
Computer has started to crash to a Black Screen on all games after a couple of minutes. Tried Furmark which gave me the same black screen crash, roughly same amount of time. Temps seem okay, GPU was around 70C - 72C right before crash. Non-gaming use has no issues.
I can actually predict the crash in Furmark ...thats how consistant it is.

Screen goes black: This happens during gameplay and in Furmark and in game main menus.

Audio looping: The last sound will loop quickly (buzzing effect) until the computer is rebooted.

Everything unresponsive: Only solution is to manually restart with reset button on case.

NO CPU OC`s. Only Factory OC of GPU(XFX 7970). Please help....

Thanks
J

Damn factory overclocks... one thing to try (I had similar issue with GTX 560Ti's factory overclocked) is to use AfterBurner or something similar and take the clocks back to reference.
Also, I notice you're on 12.4. What happens if you go to 12.3?

Same thing man.... at 12.3 it does exactly the same thing... crashes at the same point. So that rules out drivers right?
In contact with XFX at the moment... they being a bit slow but should hear back today.

Someone said I should try another Slot for the card...? what you think. Gonna give that a go tonight.

Thanks for the reply dude.....

I don't think another slot would help here actually... to paraphrase another member on this forum (who's name escapes me now!), if a PCIe card fits, it should work smile.gif
I still recommend setting back to reference clocks and testing it out. If it works fine, maybe we need to just crank the voltage up a little bit for the factory OC.

Ye... They pretty robust so you'd think it would be fine.
This is a 5 month old card... is this kinda thing known to happen where you have to set the factory setting back and mess with Voltage on a Factory OC card?

If I had only known.... could have saved a bit of cash... lol

Not entirely sure, the card might just be buggered. Probably better just to RMA it, however I suggest other things because it's what I would do whilst waiting for replies from the damn manufacturer! Besides, can't really hurt if you just set it at reference smile.gif

Ye, doubt its my PSU.... its a beast and has had no issues since I got it 4 months ago.

XFX giving me the usual hack. They dont seem too specific on what steps I can take to test it.... get the general feeling he's answering me from a clipboard of tick boxes.

Wish I could test it in another system..... but only have the one... need to figure something out or hope someone has an answer for me.
