Trouble overclocking i7 3820

Hello everyone! I'll skip the pleasantries and jump right into my issue.

Here's my current rig so you know beforehand:

Processor: Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E
Mobo: ASRock X79 Extreme4 LGA 2011 Intel X79
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
GPU: GeForce 560 Ti

I am attempting to overclock my CPU for the first time. I'm completely new to overclocking, so I've been looking around for guides and information on how to safely do it. I read that with my CPU, people have been upping their base clock (bclk) from 100 to 125 with no issues. Every time I attempt to do this, my entire PC will freeze up instantly after setting the bclk to any value above 104. As an alternative, I decided to raise my CPU multiplier to x43 from x38, which caused no issues. My machine is currently stable at 4.3 GHz after upping the CPU multiplier.

My issue is with the base clock value; Is there any known reason why my computer is instantly freezing up after raising my base clock? I tried upping my voltage from the default of around 1.1 to 1.25 in case that was the issue. Same result. Any ideas?

You can't really increase the BCLK on Sandy, what you need to do is increase the BCLK strap to 1.25 which will give you 125MHz for the core and memory without affecting everything else.

Thanks! I was able to get it up to 4.6 after increasing the strap. Still running at a cool 35 degrees thumb.gif

Have you been stress testing? 35c doesn't sound like stress testing temperature to me! rolleyes.gif
