PCI GFX cards ?

Thread Starter
Is there any point in installing additional PCI gfx cardse, for example, a nVidia 7600 series or AMD 5400 series ? Or are they so weak there is no point in such exercise for BOINC ?

I just noticed that these can be had for approx 35 - 40 $ online so just wondering.

The particular place is DX.com http://dx.com/c/computers-networking-399/hardware-parts-313/video-graphic-cards-for-pc-332?pageSize=200&sort=price&sortType=asc where I noticed these when looking for a PCI GFX card for an old PC I have around for general net use in the house.

Very weak. It's a waste of money unless you already have one laying around. The only good you get out of that you can add another monitor for desktop space.

They do have a PCI 9400gt that might be good for Physics or something.
there is also a 9500gt, i ran one on a very old desktop once, it could play doom 3 on high with 1.4ghz pentium 3/celeron, heck it even managed 25fps on wow.

True but if you try to play any new game you'd be lucky to get a few frames a minute! haha XD
post #5 of 15
For the older computers with PCI only or PRE-PCIe, (AGP) PCI will work for older games, or needing just to boost that stock on-board GMA/UMA Intel Graphics or the AMD embedded graphics. Not that a 128meg PCI card is junk... the slot just has slower bandwidth. PCI>AGP>PCIe as far as the bandwidth and quality goes.

If your computer/motherboard has a AGP slot, id say push for the AGP video card over the PCI, push faster frames, faster bandwidth, etc might even be better for streaming video/youtube. NO idea though on if it will improve streaming video, it should...in theory.

Well .. I would not bother attaching a monitor to such card as I already have 6770 Eyefinity 5 version atm and are planning to add 7870 Eyefinity 6 into the second PCI-e slot when funds allow in a month or two.

I was just wondering about BOINC in specific if its a "reasonable insvestment" installing a PCI card for that purpose, but if I understand you guys right then the general opinion seems to be its not really worth the effort unless you already have such spare card lying around in the drawer. I have two unused PCI slots in my PC with rest of the slots filled with either GFX cards or SATA controllers.

If you want to use them for physics then go for it! 9400gt or 9500gt would be good for that.

Of course!

There was a PCI 400 series GT on newegg at one point that people were using for physX.

@OP Gotcha, Definately try throwing one in to see what improvements youll get. I have 2 empty PCI slots as well...NEVER thought about throwing a card for dedicated physx.. Now you got me thinking.......wink.gif

After giving it a bit more thought I have a gut feeling it's not a that good idea, as PCI is very slow interface compared to pci-e and for the price I would be probably better off BOINC performance wise just getting a new mobo with as many PCI-E 1x slots as I can find and then just mod the sockets for taking x16 cards or use 4 dollar riser cards which covert PCI-E 1x to 16x slot and then just throwing as many ~50 dollar cards at it as fits wink.gif
