COMPUTER LOCKS UP AFTER POST TEST WITH USING AMD FX-8150

Thread Starter
Just put together my Gaming Rig

AMD FX-8150
GIGABYTE GA 990 FXA-UD5
CORSAIR VENGENCE DDR3 PC1866 2x4GB ( 16GB TOTAL )
GFORCE 680 graphics card

The problem I am having is that the computer locks up after the post test. Gigabyte's screen comes up but no keyboard response. Not sure which bios version I have. I read on one of the forums here that it might be you can only use two memory slots for AMD FX-8150. Does anyone have any suggestions ? My old replacement was AMD PHENOM II 1100T - GIGABYTE GA 890FXA-UD5 - GSKILL DDR3 PC1600 - GFORCE 570.
Thanks in advance.

Your can use all four DIMM slots so that's not the issue. I would update to the latest mobo BIOS as the mobo makers have been SLOWLY learning how to properly write the BIOS for the very different CPU architecture used in the FX/BD CPUs.

For test purposes until you get everything dialed in and stable you can always use just two DIMMs in the proper slots for dual-channel operation. I always run Memtest86+ as soon as I boot a new PC build to insure all of the DIMMs are error free. You can test each DIMM individually and as a group.

Stabilty testing with Prime95, OCCT or Linpack is desirable while monitoring CPU core temps that need to not exceed 61C for your CPU.

I'm pretty sure BD (and most amd cpu's due to their imc) have trouble running ram over 1600mhz in all 4 slots, if you can get into the bios, set them to 1600 and see if your good to go.

Many people with Thuban CPUs run (4) DIMMs @1800+ MHz. RAM frequency all the time. 2000 MHz. RAM with (4) DIMMs on FX CPUs is also common. The default RAM frequency for the FX CPUs is 1866 MHz. AMD claims to only "official support" (1) DIMM per channel @ 1866 Mhz. but people routinely run (4) DIMMs @ 1866+ MHz.

How many run using the stock northbridge frequency?
