OCN does not condone nor approve of RMA fraud.

Not saying we do, nobody was implying that really, but probably a good percentage of RMA's are because of OC'ing. tongue.gif

I see your point and I wholeheartedly agree, but...honestly, that's getting a little bit too pedantic for this thread. No offense... Just see the post after mine for the reason why I think this statement was not necessary in this thread as of yet.... tongue.gif

Thread Starter
I was asking a theoretical question, I haven't killed a GPU with light OCing, yet. The current GPU I have has locked voltage, but I do know someone who killed the same GPU model when they fried the VRAMs.
No1 will even know that you overclocked the card and, for that reason died, as far as I know, just RMA it.

Wait, I thought that at stock voltage, OCing has a microscopic chance of frying the card

It all depends on the manufacturer. Some void the warranty if you remove the stock cooler, and they will place a sticker/label somewhere that makes it obvious you opened the card. But If you overclocked use the stock cooling and didn't modify the BIOS it's unlikely they will ever know.

Just to clarify this was the part of the comment I was directing at mostly
Quote:
Suppose that I invested in a nice cooling system that allowed the GPU to operate close to room temperature under load
Removing the cooler to add another cooling system voids the warranty in most cases and we do not condone RMA under these circumstances.

Generally, they can't tell if it's been OC'd unless the VRM's are burnt out/PCB is burnt or something, but to do that much damage you'd have to overclock to silly levels with lots of voltage.
Do more research. You are a lot more likely to kill a GPU with voltage than you are through clock increases.
You'll be fine.

Lol my olllllllllld radeon 9550 didn't like 1MHz tongue.gif

EVGA and XFX (I think they still exist don't they? or maybe not) both allow you to remove the cooler and will take the card back for almost any reason if you put the stock cooler back on. I don't know about other companies.

You probably voided the warranty already when you changed the heat sink. I have seen many GFX card with warranty void stickers on some of the screws holding the stock heatsink in place. Its ofc still worth a try to put it through warranty service. Its dead after all.

My XFX 6770 Eyefinity 5 had "warranty void" stickers on the screws holding the heatsink. It was bought approx a year ago.
