Cool double post. I guess I thought wrong. But I remember getting a free 9500GT after I removed the heatsink from my 8600GT and it sploded. It was XFX.

** XFX has carefully selected the optimal thermal or fansink component for your graphics card model. We do not encourage the removal of components due to damage that may result in the process. XFX understands that some enthusiasts may choose to replace the original component with their own cooling solution. To support the gaming community, we recommend that you contact XFX prior to any modifications so that we can update your profile and product registration to avoid potential issues with warranty support. In addition, XFX support will be able to walk through the installation with you or provide feedback and pointers on available options for your specific product. You may even consider shipping your components to XFX and allow the technicians at XFX to perform the modification for you (shipping charges to XFX apply).

this is on the support section of their website. it does NOT say that removing the heatsink voids your warranty, but if, in the process of removing the heatsink/placing a new one, you physically damage your card, then they will not cover repairs. this was echoed in an email someone sent to xfx in another thread; i'll see if i can hunt it down.

basically, like EVGA, XFX will still cover your card as long as you reapply the original heatsink before sending it to them.

That is actually pretty good to know. As should my card die somehow (considering its voltage locked and under water I doubt it will happen as a result of OC, unless I do something I should not be doing in BIOS) I know I have a possibility of talking with them about it. XFX is one of the few manufacturers who bothers doing non reference all displayport card models (XFX and Powercolor for 5770,6770, Club3D and Powercolor for 6870 and 7870 models).

Thread Starter
Well, I think I damaged my Radeon Mobility 5730 GPU core, which was OCed from 650 MHz to 850 MHz two months ago. Dropping the clock rate to 650 MHz didn't remove the artifacts, it took a drop to 610 MHz to do the job. DDR3's default 800 MHz clockrate wasn't touched, but I do know that from someone else, running it at 1000 MHz will kill it.

At 650 MHz, Furmark benchmark ran the GPU to 79C, at 850 MHz, the GPU ran at 81C.

EDIT: Updating CCC from 8.xxx to 12.7 and downgrading BIOS seemed to fix the artifact problem and allow me to return to 650 MHz. O_o

I'm thinking you corrupted the drivers somehow? and updating fixed it? I thought only voltage and heat can kill a card..
