Question about GPU water blocks

Thread Starter
I have a question about a full cover block designed for the 6870
Such as this one: http://koolance.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=2003
Would it work on an ASUS 6850 Direct Cu?
The two PCBs (6870 reference, 6850 Cu) Seem to be very much alike.
6870
264
6850
267

Could anyone shed some light on this, as I can get the afore mentioned block from a friend for a good price.

I'm sorry, but it will not work bud. There are mounting holes on the top of the 6870 card that the 6850 does not have. The waterblock uses these holes. There are some VRMs on the right side of the 6870's PCB that the WB cools as well. The placements of these VRMs are completely different on the 6850.

On another note, makes sure that you can adjust the voltages on your 6850 first. I had a pair of 6850 that I decided to WC and it turned out to be a complete was a money because I could not up the voltage. The near ambient temps (even under 100% load) was not enough to help with my overclocks. The 6850 runs pretty cool and it does not warrant the need for water.

If you still want to watercool them, then you're only solution is to use a GPU only universal block (like I did) and slap some heatsinks on the ram ships and VRMs. Then, you're going to put some kind of airflow on those heatsinks so that you can overclock it without burning up components.

My 2cents.gif Sell the card(s) and take the money that would be used for water and get some faster/newer cards.

Edit: I just read what version of card you have. You can control the voltage, but I still stand by my 2cents.gif

Not really that keen on overclocking atm. Just started university, so most of my gaming and clocking is on a hold, going for a quiet as possible PC now. Only gaming I'll be doing in the foreseeable future is Guildwars 2 and League of Legends, so I don't reckon I will need a new GPU any time soon :/
TY for the advice though. Suppose universal it is, though they look so meh compared to full cover blocks

Yeah they are kind of an ugly solution. But in most cases, they do cool the GPU better and you will not have to buy another WB for a GPU ever again. wink.gif

But since you are starting college, then save the money and buy beer!
