Folding with nVidia Optimus?

Thread Starter
I want to fold on my GT 555m only (no CPU)and I'm currently using the GPU3 client of F@H?

Here's a screen of the client.
337

Is there no need to change any settings? F@H is already whitelisted in the drivers. And the regular client doesn't seem to be using my gpu at all?

Close that viewer/simulator and don't let it run, it sucks power that could be used for folding.

Can you post a screen shot of your client and afterburner and task manager on the performance tab? Well see what it is using to fold.

Also don't forget to enter your team number as 37726.

Okay, closed the viewer after the screenshot. But, how do you check if OC is stable while folding?

Its folding on your GPU and not your CPU like you want.

The client will let you know if there are errors. (ie unstable)

actually, I am going for GPU only folding. I can't OC cpu anyway and it's an i3-2310m. The one above I'm using is the GPU version of F@H, I'm wondering if you can do the same (GPU only folding) on the normal version of F@H? or does it have to be this one?

The temps are hitting 85 C because the fan speed doesn't go up until the gpu hits that temp :/

Yeah, I was just confirming that it was doing what you wanted.

You can use the V7 client if you want, one plus is that it will show your PPD in a single client. With v6 you need to use HFM.

I was wondering how your temps would be, 85 is hot but should be within limits, laptops aren't meant to carry these loads. Try propping up the back so there is better airflow and it may help temps.

Hmm too bad I know the ROG series from ASUS are supposed to be good up to 105c(absolute max) iirc. Anyways, on topic basically you want that bar for gpu usage to always be at or above 90% (I assume 90 anyways), I say 90% because you probably want to be able to use it as well, you want that graph in afterburner to be roughly +/- 2-5% of whatever you have it set to use (I know you can set gpu and at one point cpu with the v7 windows client gui), idk how well yours scales or if it works for everyone but I set my 460m to 1000 mhz on the ram (seems to me to be less important for folding)  and am able to hold 750/1500/1000 stable for folding 24/7 been doing that for over a year at between 65-75C (with the beast fans on my laptop), stopped here recently because the gpu units were killing my usability, no response to changes in the gui, etc.

As silvrr said prop the back up so it's at an angle (supposed to be better for typing anyways) and/or get one of those notebook chiller pads (they might help), if your laptop is smaller, idk mine is pretty much max air flow stock so it doesn't help much to have one maybe 1C at most.

The v7 client starts off blank,, you have to add the pieces of hardware to it through the options menu.

Can anyone link the v7 gpu version here? All i found on the site was v6. When i install the v7 from the main page(whitelisted to optimus, set to GPU on install) my gpu stays at 0% usage. So v7 seems to be using my HD3000 to fold :/ anybody know how ti fix this?

Edit: Reinstalled v7, the slot tab only shows uniprocessor, I don't know how to add a GPU. I press add, then select gpu but when i save and open it up again the gpu slot dissapears

I am using a cooler that is angle adjustable, but at below 85 C the onboard fan is spinning at about 50% and goes up to full when I hit 86 C. Maybe MSi think 85 C is a safe temp? Mind you, ambient room temp here is about 30 C though. I'm currently using CM High Performance TIM on it, would swapping that out improve cooling more? I finished one fold, 12hrs and it's stable.

Edit: I can add my CPU by setting smp @ 4, but when I add gpu @ -1 it saves but doesnt add my gpu to the folding threads

Keep that lappy raised on all four corners and use a table fan if you need it.
