Question about switching over to a Crosshair V

Thread Starter
I ordered my new Crosshair V Formula last night to replace my Asus M4A89TD PRO and someone was telling me recently that i'll need to uninstall Windows off my SSD before taking my rig apart and then reinstall it after the new board is in with just the SATA from the SSD connected.( i know about not connecting the HDD while installing Windows)
Someone else told me i did not have to uninstall Windows and to just make sure the SATA from the SSD is the only one connected when i boot the first time and yet a 3rd person told me to just swap out the boards, reconnect everything and run it and just make sure to download all the drivers again.
does anyone here know the right answer ? biggrin.gif

Also, i have 4x4 Corsair Vengeance 1600 and i was reading in some of the customer reviews on Newegg that some were having problems with memory faster than 1333. I understand that most people who are happy don't post reviews and the people that are not will but has anyone heard anything about this or are these just isolated incidents with people who might have problems with something other than the board ?
Thank you,
-Lhotse

While you can just run it from the old Windows (I've done this recently) it will probably actually increase boot times hugely and cause other problems. Just reinstall windows, you don't need to wipe the SSD before hand, just format it when you go to install windows on the new board.

As for the RAM, you shouldn't have a problem with it, although I may wait on an answer from someone who owns that board first!

If you have an OEM copy of windows 7 you will have to buy a new copy, because the oem is tied to the first mobo.
if you have the full version, i really done know but I would not believe you had to whipe the ssd

on the ram if it causes poblems you could always go into bios and lower the speed.

Ohh, I forgot about OEM versions, but I still stand by my advice, to get the full performance of your rig reinstall windows. If you don't you won't really see it at it's full potential. After moving the SSD over when I upgraded to 2011 from 1155 I saw boot times go from 3 seconds to 25 seconds or more. Removed all the old drivers and junk but it still happened, after a fresh install I haven't had any problems at all however.

You don't HAVE to do a wipe for a fresh install, but if you don't you will be stuck with files from the old install that will be a complete pain to remove and you will never get them all. Best bet is to backup data and wipe. That way you don't have old system files without write permissions clogging up your disk space and you don't have to spend hours trying to delete them all. Always wipe when you reinstall windows unless you want to have a complete mess to deal with! thumb.gif

Do I need to buy another copy ? and so I should uninstall the existing Windows from the SSD before I take it apart and then install it again after i install the board ?

Yes, that comes with an OEM license, which means that it's locked to whatever motherboard you first installed it on. You might be able to get around it, but you'll probably need a new copy.

If you upgrade a lot, never buy a copy of Windows that has an OEM license.

Back up anything you know you want onto your second drive, put the new mobo in, when you do first startup boot from the disk you need to buy, and you can whipe the SSD when the new OS is installed.

If you buy a version like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116716
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116717

will be transferable, so you wont have to buy another copy for future upgrades.
