Seagate has admitted that it may have been wrong about these new-fangled solid-state storage thingies, investing in Israeli solid-state drive (SSD) specialist DensBits to develop low-cost SSDs for enterprise and consumer markets.

Well... duh Seagate.

Lets all give Seagate the slow clap...

Just for clarification that's not some form of unfortunate infection.

Seagate, let me introduce you to Microsoft. You both have missing the boat in common.

Huh? They make HDDs. More or less, they make the same HDDs as everyone else over the years.

You hear "my seagate died on me" far more than "my wd died on me". I too wouldn't be surprised if these SSD's are crap when they come out. They'll probably still sell like hot cakes because Seagate will pump them through their big box store distribution channels.

Based on what?

Long-term and in large volume... the failure rates of HDD manufacturers are similar. Some models/series/years are worse than others but overall the same.

The big box store distribution channels are not where most HDDs or SSDs are sold. Not even close.

This. I'm so tired of people whining on Seagate without having even owned a disk from them.

I own ELEVEN Seagate drives (from .4s to my newest one, a .12). Only one failed, and that was after eight years of use, abuse, carrying it to one place or another, and being inside a piss poor cooled case. The poor drive never functioned at less than 45ºC.

If anything, this is good. Will bring more competition to the SSD market, and even better, their Momentus series drives will get a nice needed bump smile.gif
