The cards with the AMD logo on it are all the revised reference PCB design, i.e. the design is specified by AMD and should therefore be identical for all manufacturers.

So now we play by your rules? rolleyes.gif

Anyways, the reference design 7950 is a 7970 pcb. It's just like oh, um take a guess at the last generation Cayman. Holy moly, identical 6950 reference = 6970 reference.

Those are the only rules I play by.

Reference design refers to a technical blueprint of a system that is intended for others to copy. AMD specified a design for their partners to use. That is the only design that they can put the AMD logo on.

Hence AMD logo = reference design.

Doesn't have to be the original reference design.

There's actually two reference 7970 pcbs that are both provided by AMD. One has the AMD logo and one doesn't but they're both reference just the same. Not having an AMD logo does not mean it's not reference. Hell at this point AIB's are free to color boards however they want, just like HIS for ex. Their 7970s are now blue with no logos and yet they are reference.

To put the AMD logo on a card it has to be a reference PCB as specified by AMD. To use the reference layout with a very slight change, like the colour of the PCB for example, they don't need to put the AMD logo on, but everything remains essentially the same - it becomes a non-reference design even if it follows the same layout.

I do this for a living with plant equipment. I send out a reference design. If the fabricator follows that design they are free to put our name on it and use our documentation and registrations (after passing our QC procedure).

If they deviate, even slightly, from what we have specified then it becomes a non-reference design. They are not allowed to use our name or documentation as we have no control over the product. Coincidentally the last one we rejected as a reference design was because they changed the paint type and colour.

Now whose being pedantic? All this just because you feel the revised 7950 pcb should be considered the reference design?

You should go to coolingconfigurator and input the 7950 by AMD, ie. the OEM card and READ what you find the output is. Be sure to come back and call me more names.

OK, all I am trying to say is that if AMD specify a design it is a reference design. That is what reference design means.

It doesn't matter if AMD provide 10 different designs, they are all reference designs.

So the 7950 design with the 7970 layout and VRMs is reference as it was provided by AMD
The 7950 design with the 6+6 pin connector and revised VRM is reference as it was provided by AMD

CoolingConfigurator list both the 7970 style and the updated 7950 style as reference.

Just that one is a Rev. 1 reference and the other is a Rev. 2 reference but they are both reference designs.

Got my point Rupert?*
