Looking to Downgrade From i7 920 -> FX-4100 - Page 3

Ok well maybe switching to a FX-4100 isn't such a good idea. Plans always sound good in your head when you first come up with them, that's why I always check at OCN and/or sleep on it for a bit.
At least I can go through with the GPU swap out.

I actually disabled 2 cores just now and for some reason DOTA 2 crashes when I launch it. Weird.

I'm sorry, but I really don't see the point to all of this. You are going to lose money selling used stuff unless you find somebody who's going to pay more than they should. Then you are going to buy a worse CPU that may or may not use slightly less power... Seems like a waste of time/effort and possibly money.

Even with swapping GPU's... Admittedly this will probably have a better chance of saving you money than the rest of the system, but how much difference do they have in idle power consumption? Especially since you are only talking about going to a middle-of -the-road GPU... I mean c'mon, aren't we just splitting hairs at this point.

I would do as was suggested and disable a couple cores to save a few watts if you want, going much further seems like 2 steps back for 1 step forward to me.

Fair enough on the CPU aspect, that has been acknowledged.
An AMD HD 7850 is quite powerful enough for any game out there today and while it won't max anything out at 1920x1200 it can certainly pull medium-high without AA. That is quite enough for my needs seeing as I don't even have a graphically intense game I play atm. And the 7 series has had quite a reduction in idle power consumption. The other purpose of downgrading the GPU is to sell off BOTH of my 5870's, so I stand to gain some money if I can sell both of them at the same time.

Not worth..... just sell one 5870 and keep what you have, seriously.

HD7850 is right behind HD6970, so it handles 1200p with ease.

Disable core and underclock that 920 is a very good option.

I know where you are coming from OP.

I just recently "upgraded" to the i5-3570k +UD5H ($346 total from Microcenter: MC) from the i7-920+UD5 due to the very reasons you have; heat and power consumption. At the same time I also took in account the current value of the i7 920 (paid $213 at MC) and was able to sell it for $175 on ebay about a month ago (it's all about the presentation). Also, I wanted to take advantage of the full performance of my SSD (Kingston Hyperx back in Feb), even though i noticed a improvement on my x58 from HDDs RAID0, i still wanted the full performance. And the MC deals on the SB and IB was another thing.

So all these factors were my valid reasons to justify my "upgrade". Even though one might say you are losing money, its all about getting your money worth from the years of using it and being able to recoup some money to fund your next setup. for me, in the long run the "upgrade" I think its going to be worth it. So far its has especailly being able to use my Vertex 4 SSD to its fullest. thumb.gif

I remember the heat being produced from my i7-920, and during the summer it was really hot, felt like my legs were on fire since my system is right next to me, with the rear top fan venting the heat out. lol

Since you have access to microcenter, then you can take advantage their CPU+mobo deals (AMD or Intel) in which you are getting a pretty good deal.

For the HD5870s, i would appraise them for $145-$165 if you plan to sell them. thumb.gif
