Right Click on "Speakers" and set to "Disabled"
Right Click on "SPDIF OUT' and set "Enabled"
Now Right Click on SPDIF and choose "Properties"
There are four tabs on the top of the pop up box - choose "Supported Formats"
Make sure and check the boxes for "DTS Audio" and "Dolby Digital" The box for Microsoft WMA Pro Audio should not be check marked
Under the sample rate options be sure and check 48 kHZ - none of the other sampling rates should be checked
Click the "Apply" button
Now go to the Advanced Tab
Under the Default Format options choose "2 channel, 24 bit, 48000 Hz Studio Quality"
Click the "Apply" button
Reboot to set and make sure all changes are made
Test for sound

What application are you using to test for sound? WMP, VLC, WinAMP

i cant find spdif out, because I only have an optical cable going straight to the stereo, the speakers device is for other types of cables so it says no speakers are plugged in

Do you have a stand alone Realtek control panel? I know that many of the Realtek driver packages contain a stand alone control panel that can work in conjunction with or independently of the Windows sound control panel.

In the Windows sound control panel I'm fairly certain that the Realtek Digital Output is the same thing as S/PDIF since it's the only digital output from the onboard sound right?

I am unsure what s/pdif is but yeah its only digital output from the onboard sound

there is a control panel, but there is no option to change to stereo or 5.1 or anything

S/PDIF is just an acronym for digital audio connect. The original naming had something to do with Sony. But essentially it is a digital interconnect possible via coax (your onboard sound doesn't have) or fiber optic cable (TOSLINK) which your onboard sound does have. Sorry, didn't mean to confuse the issue.

Did you make the other sample rate and format changes that I suggested in post #12?

I want to reiterate that you won't have any options for changing your PC speaker configuration when using digital interconnects. That passes the digital data directly to your AV which is then responsible for decoding the signal and producing the final sound that you hear through your speakers.

I asked earlier how you were testing the sound output. What program are you using? WinAMP, WMP, VLC etc. Because there may be some settngs in the application itself that need to be changed.
