How are multipliers locked on cpu's?

I am curious about how a cpu multiplier is locked. And conversely, is it something that can be unlocked? Is it built in, or is it a software issue? Forgive my ignorance, but I am assuming if it was something software related, there would probably be a hack for it already. And if there is, why isn't it more prevalent?thinking.gif

CPU multipliers are locked via hardware. I'm not aware of any way to unlock a modern CPU that was locked by the manufacturer.

I've often wondered that as well. I've noticed maybe 2-3 CPU's that unlocked themselves on various forums. I'm actually surprised no one has figured out how to unlock multipliers yet.
