Need help choosing speakers... - Page 2

Hello pioneerisloud,

Both the F12 and PSW505 are tuned somewhere around 35hz give or take. I don't see any significant benefit there. Neither can really be used for response below 30hz.

Well, they'll both go below 30Hz (I've had the F12 before), it does start dropping off at around 35Hz though. I haven't OWNED a PSW505 yet, but I have played with one before. To me personally, it appears that the driver is of better quality than the BIC, its a beefier driver, that's capable of lower response below tuned frequencies. Not to say that I am correct, just my obeservation when I was looking at it.

Most of the HT forums I've looked around at though, say what I was simply repeating above though. The 505 is better for music than the F12 is, the F12 is excellent for HT use though. Remember that enclosure design is only one thing that's going to affect sound output. You could put the two drivers in the same enclosure and they're going to sound different.

Again, I do agree with you on all of your points above. I just feel that tower speakers are too difficult to use in a PC setup most of the time. As much as it pained me to do so, I actually just retired my PC tower speakers because I just don't have the room anymore, and am now using a spare pair of B652's for now.

Thread Starter
Thanks for the further replies guys, i really appreciate it.

To expand on what has been discussed and the fact that I won't be ordering anything til the 15th or later heres another question.

I can expand my budget up to $800 if needed, I don't want to but I have some more disposable income heading my way. With that said, and music (some partying, but mainly loud listening to music) being the focus of what I want my setup for, what direction would you go then? And is bypassing the sub really worth it? I am very raw when it comes to knowledge of home audio set ups and I just find that my interest in dubstep and electronic music would seem to lead me to believe that a sub would be worthwhile but I really don't know anything.

Again thanks for all the suggestions and comments to go into why you picked what you did, I really appreciate all the help that can be had on these forums.

No you don't want to bypass a sub if you can avoid it. Regardless of how good floor standing speakers will be, a good subwoofer will always compliment them nicely. Moreso with bookshelf speakers.

A sub will generally play deeper and with less distortion than your average tower speaker. But, due to how low frequencies behave in the average listening room, using a dedicated sub(or up to four) with your towers will net smoother bass response.

If you want a good dubstep/trance/electronic stereo system, the sub will almost be more important because you'll probably want to really feel it, especially for parties. So a really responsive sub will be important. I have a Martin Logan Dynamo 500 sub, and while the volume control is in the back it's is a great sub. But that may kill your budget, so the 300W one may work for you better for the price.

Subs dont' have a volume control. If you use the gain knob as volume, then you're setting things up incorrectly. That is NOT a volume knob, its a gain knob. Gain is to be used to match the input and outputs.

Thank you; I'm aware of that. I just figured for someone who is new to building a stereo system some of those details can be simplified. Otherwise we can get into the phase and crossover of the system as well.

Either way, I really like this sub.

Roger that. cheers.gif I feel it would be better to explain what the gain is actually there for, rather then let them set it up wrong.
