IPC is static. It doesn't change regardless of clock speed. IPS is what matters.

And no one is saying that IPC doesn't matter. They're saying that IPC is just one part of the entire equation, not the whole thing, with clock speed being the other part.

And yes. IPC is pretty worthless on its own. You could have a chip that could run 4 IPC, yet only clock to 2GHz, and be reduced to dust by a chip with 3 IPC yet capable of running at 3GHz.

OR you could have both, and there you go Nehalem. That was a cult architecture. Probably in the scale of Athlon64.

I don't disagree that IPS is what's important. However, given what we already know about Piledriver, IPC is a valid concern. Piledriver's on the same 32nm process, so clock speed won't be considering considerably, and a lot of the headroom provided by RCM and the reworked flip flops is going to go towards power reduction. If clock speed is essentially known, what else is there to hope for?

I was always under the impression the Bulldozer gen2 would be closer to Phenom II clock for clock. Which would finally be a reason for Phenom II x6 users to make the move it being clocked higher and newer instructions.

I think it will need another good 3 or 4 gens to come to Intels clock for clock speed. But currently the Bulldozers are very nicely priced and for those that don't need the fastest they're sellable quite well. Not everyone needs the fastest cpus around.
