i7 3820 CPU stopping/major lag spikes, low settings in BF3 with GTX 690.

Hey guys,

Got a problem here.

338
338
338

Getting serious lag spikes or stuttering with the CPU, have no idea what's causing it but the game literally stops and then stars again it's that bad. Not a slow down, it stops. Doesn't happen always but every 3-4 seconds it does and usally happens in rapid succession.

CPU was set at deafault settings, I have it now OCed slightly to 4.3ghz, no change. GPU usage is low, around the 50% mark and CPU usage is high but not over 80%. Hyperthreading is off, this didn't effect it at all. Windows core parking is off, this didn't help. All my settings are currently on low. Ultra makes no difference, AA makes no difference. CPU ain't too hot, it's never above 55-60deg, GPUs are never above 50-60deg because as I said they aren't being used more than 50%.

I'm really confused. It isn't the GPU, it worked fine in quad SLI with my i7 2700k system I recently sold and quad SLI was smooth as butter, not to mention this happens regardless of settings, low, high, ultra etc. Limiting the FPS produces horrible results and it's better not limiting it.

My specs are:

Windows 7 64bit

i7 3820 HT off with default settings
ASUS X79 Sabertooth
Corsair Vengeance RAM 8GB @ 1600mhz
EVGA GTX 690 @ default
Corsair 60GB Force 3 SSD
Silverstone Strider Gold 1000w

What could cause a CPU to behave like this? Couldn't be the video drivers, in the graph the GPU is uneffected, yet the CPU is just stopping for some reason. Could it be the RAM? I did have issues with the RAM when building/installing Windows 7. Will try changing DIMM slots which was the problem but I'm doubtful it will work.

Please help

EDIT: Have tried different motherboards, different CPUs all with the same problem. What could be causing this kind of CPU behavior? Because on low settings in BF3 an i7 3930k with a GTX 690 doesn't have any performance issues, alos have very low and bad 3DMark 11 scores around P12000 which is also bad.

It stutters every few seconds. GPU usage drops to 10% when it happens and then suddenly increases again to 50-60%.

I have sitting next to me:

x2 X79 Sabertooth Motherboards
i7 3820
i7 3930k
Corsair Vengenace 16GB RAM 1866mhz
Corsair 8GB RAM 1600mhz
x2 EVGA GTX 690s
Corsair 60GB Force 3 SSD

Have tried both CPUs in both motherboards, with both sets of RAM and still have the same issue. Used the same SSD and GTX 690. So I'm really confused what's causing it. 3DMark 11 gives really low scores/bad performance but the stuttering isn't as bad P11000-13000. And this is on a clean install of WIndows 7 64bit.

The GTX 690 is fine and so is it's drivers, it worked beautifully in my P8P67 i7 2700k set-up P17000. The SSD worked fine before I formatted it. Can not correctly formatting an SSD cause these problems? Outside of that the only think I can think of is software/drivers but what on earth would cause my CPU to act like this? Both of them. Low or ultra settings happens just as bad.

Doubt that its any of your hardware since you've swapped everything out and it still does it. I would suggest possibly the main board but I'd trouble shoot the software first. Have you tried re installing the game? And downloading the latest direct x and installing it? I've gotten similar issues in metro and redoing direct x solved it for me.

Lets see.. it happens on two different CPUs (3820 and 3930K). It happens with two different sets of RAM. The only thing the same is the GPU, SSD and the board. You've got two 690's so we MIGHT be able to rule that out (hardware wise) at this stage.

You say you have tried different motherboards, but from I can tell it appears as if you have failed to mention whether they were the SAME board or you actually tried different brand or different model, or both. I see two sabertooth boards in your second post which would lead me to assume you meant you tried two boards that were the same.

Have you installed chipset drivers? Updated the BIOS for your board (if any)? Are you using AHCI and the Intel controller for your SSD? Have you updated those drivers? Check the Windows event logs for any obvious signs? Do you have a mechanical drive to throw a copy of Windows on to test if it MIGHT be the SSD?

What version of GPU drivers are you running?
Check event logs for any signs of GPU drivers "stopped responding".

Same motherboard just have 2 of them and tried both of them. Both X79 Sabertooths and bought them both yesterday.

Tried 2 sets of chipset drivers but was about to wipe and re-install both of them next to see if it helps. Tried the last 2 sets of Nvidia drivers and the latest beta drivers.

SSD driver, ran a benchmark with the it 3930k which is having the exact same issues and scored higher than my i7 2700k system which was done a week ago so it isn't the SSD.

Also both sets of RAM are good.

Guess it has to be driver or software related. Which is just weird!

This has happened 28 times in the last 24 hours in event viewer but no critical and no warnings, found this in errors. Everything else is errors was pretty insignificant.

SSD driver, ran a benchmark with the it 3930k which is having the exact same issues and scored higher than my i7 2700k system which was done a week ago so it isn't the SSD.
Also both sets of RAM are good.
Guess it has to be driver or software related. Which is just weird!

A benchmark to test whether an SSD is good means squat IMO! I still recommend testing with a mechanical drive just in case it is some sort of problem with the board + SSD combination. I take it there is no BIOS update available...
Also still need to check out the event logs for any signs of software issues that are obvious. Also which SATA controller are you using?

How did you verify the RAM? Memtest?
Testing with the same two boards is not sufficient - they could both have the same problem!

Just got your edit!

There's not enough data from those events...Where is the event description? It wouldn't be the first time I've seen an optical drive lock up the system - try removing it.
Also can we run a DXDIAG and see if that spits out anything...

Run the game in multi then run Resource Monitor, select the game's exe in the list and click it so it's filtered. Look at Disk Activity and see what files the game uses and the response times. Play the game until those spikes occur, see if the response times spike too. If not, it's not about DATA related, (rams, disk, etc)

Maybe, ethernet/wifi adapter or even Router problem ? Set your LAN ip on router's DMZ setting and see if it continues to spike. You probably know what DMZ is, it connects you directly to internet, no firewall, no NAT. Not secure but still, you would see if port forwarding is a problem or not.
